We are in the process of purchasing a Pacific Trawler 40 - a bit odd to be buying a boat just at the end of the boating season (for us anyway - we are "rainbirds" headed to AZ) but it's the right boat and a bird in the hand. Our plan is to put the vessel on the hard and shrink wrap it - we've done this in the past but many years ago and have lost some of our memories of that time. We are looking for, A. a well-manged and reasonably priced facility to store it on the hard, and B. a firm that does reliable shrink wrapping. Pretty much anywhere on the Puget Sound would be fine. We appreciate suggestions or experiences. Open to being talked out of our plan too. OBTW we will be summering in BC / AK and won't be contracting for permanent in-the-water moorage, so this is a longer term plan.

North Harbor Diesel in Anacortes will work well for you. The monthly dry dock storage for your size vessel would be around $300ish per month. Shrink wrap about $2k and they do it there in the shop. The shrink wrap is done very professionally. You can stay onboard your boat when you are on the dry dock. No external boat work is allowed however due to state regulations in Washington while you are on the hard. I have no affiliation with this business, just passing on my knowledge.

Make sure they put in an adequate number of vents in the shrink wrap.

Thanks, just the sort of feedback I'm looking for.

Be sure to ask North Harbor or whoever stores your boat for winterization advise for being on the hard, which has to be more thorough than in the water with its moderating effect. Like in Bellingham, Anacortes can potentially have winter temperatures that can do damage, sometimes in the single digits.

Anacortes is a good place to dry store a yacht. There are a number of yards to choose from. You do need to winterize, it isn't like Michigan but it does freeze. There is good access to all sorts of marine services close by. Also maybe the best place to depart for BC and AK.

What exactly do you mean about doing work while on the hard? What state regulation would that be?

Washington is cranking down on doing work on your boat while it is in the dry dock yard. For work to be completed on your boat, the boat must be moved to the "repair yard" where the employees complete the work for you. They take elaborate measures to "capture" any and all foreign material that may come off your boat through extensive tarping. Its an environmental thing. You maybe able to find yards that are not so strict in this area. It seems to vary a little from dry dock to dry dock yard.

Many of the yards won't even let you wash your boat - at all. I think North Harbor Diesel is in that camp. Some will if you use only water, no soap. Many won't let you do even interior work without moving to a service yard, charged by the day. There are a few that are more lax about that.

I've often heard people complain that there is no one reliable to do shrink wrap. Maybe NHD has someone to do it for boats in their yard but it does seem to be an issue

When I saw the thread title, I thought "that would take a LOT of shrink wrap!"

We always recommend to folks that store their boats on the hard and/or shrink wrap to utilize Kanberra Gel in order to keep any mold and mildew at bay. We sell in it in our store (and use it throughout our boat).
