Hey everyone,

I’m working on a project for my dad’s 90th birthday, trying to build a model of a Romsdal North Sea trawler "Mareva" (similar to Torsk, Delfin, etc.) built by Hagen Shipyards and designed by the late Knut Hagen. He lived on one of these boats from the early 1960s all the way through the late 1990s, nearly 30 years of his life. It’s a huge part of his story. He’s always been really traditional when it comes to boats, joking around that anything built today is just "Tupperware" compared to the classics!

I’m hoping to 3D print the model at home and I want to capture the overall feel of the boat as accurately as I can from the day he purchased it. It'll be around 500mm long when printed. While working on it, I had a couple questions I was hoping someone here might know more about:

Were these boats typically painted with a white top hull, blue sheer line/stripe, and black or dark red antifouling? Or were there other common schemes back then? I have photos of it recently but want to capture the day he first got it, for instance, adding polished and non patinaed brass handrails and a brass propeller. Ive read that red oxide was more common on steel hulls and that maybe black was used on the wooden ones like Mareva?

If anyone happens to have photos or info on other Romsdal trawlers like Torsk, Delfin, or similar, especially showing the hull, waterlines, or color setups, I’d absolutely love to see them.

My dad sold his boat in the late '90s, and last he heard, it ended up in Victoria, Canada.

Appreciate any help or even just stories you might have. Thanks so much for reading!

I grew up on wooden boats and back in the 70's and 80's there was no option other than red antifouling. Was never a thought to use a different colour, because they didn't exist.

I last saw the actual Mareva about four years ago in Genoa Bay BC. Viewed from my dinghy, it seemed in decent shape for it's age.

Maybe one of our Canadians can give you an update.

You said he lived on one of “these boats”. Was it Mareva? A wooden Romsdal is near me at Fishermen’s Terminal. I think it is Ursa Major or Minor.

I hope they can!

Having seen her in real life, was she a pure white or more of a satin cream white? Its hard to tell from the photos.

Thats a good starting point thank you. It seems shes still out there somewhere!

When you saw it in person, was it a cream white or more of a pure white?

I think not. Ursa Major has been berthed at Fisherman's Terminal for many years.

Mareva was moored at Genoa Bay on Vancouver Island in July of 2022 when last I was there I have photos and will attempt to up load them if someone will tell me how.

Mac2, the boat at fisherman’s in Seattle near the fish market is a Malahide Trawler. They were built in Northern Ireland and commissioned in Malahyde. Ursa is owned by Joyce Gauthier and Ursa was in the SE Alaska Charter service for many years. If you are interested in knowing more about Ursa Major, I can give you Joyce’s phone number.
