We are looking to join a trawler friendly yacht club in the San Diego area.

Are there any folks here that are members of any of the Yacht Clubs in the San Diego area?

We are looking right now at Silvergate as it was recommended by some friends.

Hi Kevin, we have been members of the San Diego Yacht Club since 2007. While it is somewhat sailing heavy with an America's cup legacy, it welcomes all boaters. I'm not sure what your expectations are re 'trawler friendly', but we've not seen boat discrimination! There is an active cruising club that puts on group powerboat cruises year round - some local, some to Catalina and some to Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands. SDYC has also taken over sponsoring the CUBAR event between San Diego and Cabo. The club has a long term lease at Buffalo Beach in Catalina, with onshore facilities, a year round beach master, shuttle service from Avalon and cabins, bbq's and beach toys. Our slip powerboat neighbors include a Fleming, Offshore, Ocean Alexander, Mikelson and Navigator. Approximately half the boats on our dock are power. Our experience is that the boats in the club are more frequently used compared with other marinas (we've been in the Sheraton, Cabrillo Isle, Kona Kai and Sunroad marinas over the years). The club has an undeserved reputation as perhaps a bit snooty, but we have not found that to be the case - most members are long time residents of the Point Loma area and use the club as a family gathering spot. We waited 14 years to get a slip for our 57' Nordlund, but well worth it for the onsite benefits. It's an economical option if you get a slip compared to commercial marinas and the members are friendly. The only downside we know of is that there are approximately 600 slips and about 1200 Flag members, meaning a slip may ways off in the future.

I'd endorse Southwestern as well!

Thanks you guys!!!

what we are after is a club to enjoy a nice cocktail in the evening, and chit chat with other boaters.

A slip??? I hadn't thought much about that but someday??? Maybe??? Right now we are cruising.

Both are good for that action!

I never joined a YC here but I like Southwestern YC for the beautiful location, general friendliness and good vibes. All three of our kids took their first sailing lessons at camps there many summers ago so got to hang out there pretty regularly. Would have joined but the wait list for bigger slips is loooooong (as it is everywhere in SD)

I'll look at both southwestern and SDYC

Any silvergate members here???

Over the years I've spent quite a bit of time at both SDYC and SWYC, but never joined. SWYC has a trial membership which is a good way to get started, in fact my wife and I are toying with the idea of joining that program before the summer. You get to try the club out, hang out there, go to functions by just paying dues and bar minimums. After that, you can decide to pay to join or move on. You can't get in line for a slip, which for a boat of your size would likely be several years. Initiation fee is $12,500 at SWYC if you do decide to join. Dues are $180/mo plus $150 bar/food minimum/ quarter. SDYC has a much higher initiation fee if you are over 55. SDYC is very nice and considered to be a bit posh. SWYC and Sivergate are considered a bit more casual. Last time I checked, Silvergate dues were quite a bit higher than SWYC due to paying off the new clubhouse and dock. I have not been there since the new clubhouse was built but know a few members and they enjoyed the club. Likely easier to get a slip at Silvergate, but that's speculation on my part, but of course it depends on boat length.

Give SWYC a look, it's a very nice facility with some nice folks and would be my choice.

Thanks everyone!

We are going to stay at Silvergate for a week, and have applied for membership, based on some friends who have stayed there several times are reciprocal from their home club in Alameda.

We are new to formal Yacht Clubs, but really like the comradery we experience in La Paz and hope to replicate that at Silvergate.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm sure we will use our reciprocal privileges to have a drink and meal at SDYC and Southwestern.

Southwestern & SDYC are both great clubs, you may have a better chance of a slip someday at SWYC. I am a member of Coronado Yacht Club and have been for almost 30 years, we are in desperate need of a new clubhouse, but the Coastal Commision has put high demands for a continuous public access through our leasehold. Welcome to the YC community, when you have finished cruising, participate in your YC activities and become involved- you'll make a lot of new and lifelong friends and have a lot of fun!

Hi Kevin. I am a member at SWYC. We selected it over Silvergate after doing the seatrial programs at each. But that was just us. Suggest you consider that (the trial programs) before commiting to either.

We have been members of Silver Gate since 2009 and have had our PT 35 Sundeck docked here for over five years. This is a small and friendly club with a good mix of sail and power. Look us up when you’re here.

Nanci, it was so nice to meet you and spend some time talking about Silvergate.
We are excited to join your club, and enjoy the facilities, and commradery.

To the rest of the TF world considering a Yacht Club in San Diego, we have been berthed at Silvergate for the last several days. We have found the people here to be very laid back, and nice. Everyone has went out of their way to make us feel at home!

If you are considering a Yacht Club in San Diego, you need to look at Silvergate.
