Hi Kevin, we have been members of the San Diego Yacht Club since 2007. While it is somewhat sailing heavy with an America's cup legacy, it welcomes all boaters. I'm not sure what your expectations are re 'trawler friendly', but we've not seen boat discrimination! There is an active cruising club that puts on group powerboat cruises year round - some local, some to Catalina and some to Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands. SDYC has also taken over sponsoring the CUBAR event between San Diego and Cabo. The club has a long term lease at Buffalo Beach in Catalina, with onshore facilities, a year round beach master, shuttle service from Avalon and cabins, bbq's and beach toys. Our slip powerboat neighbors include a Fleming, Offshore, Ocean Alexander, Mikelson and Navigator. Approximately half the boats on our dock are power. Our experience is that the boats in the club are more frequently used compared with other marinas (we've been in the Sheraton, Cabrillo Isle, Kona Kai and Sunroad marinas over the years). The club has an undeserved reputation as perhaps a bit snooty, but we have not found that to be the case - most members are long time residents of the Point Loma area and use the club as a family gathering spot. We waited 14 years to get a slip for our 57' Nordlund, but well worth it for the onsite benefits. It's an economical option if you get a slip compared to commercial marinas and the members are friendly. The only downside we know of is that there are approximately 600 slips and about 1200 Flag members, meaning a slip may ways off in the future.
