Formosa 42 Double Cabin
Recently hauled and replaced both stuffing boxes and "forward," packing hoses!! Weeks later I discovered I have "AFT" PACKING HOSES between the stuffing boxes and where the shafts exit the hull!! These hoses are brittle and cracked and look like they need to be replaced ASAP!! SHOULDN'T THE YARD HAVE CHECKED THOSE AND REPLACED THEM 6 WEEKS AGO WHEN THE HAD THE SHAFTS PULLED?? I didn't even know the existed until we were working on the shower sump and saw them. Are ALL TRAWLERS set up this way or is my Formosa unique???

Thanks again. Bob on My Lady in Marathon

They should have looked BUT YOU also should have been aware of the secondary packings/hoses and told them. YOU should be aware of what is in and on your vessel.
How long is your vessel? That is often what determines the shafting setup.
Aha , I see 42' in the header.

Regardless they should have noted those extras and at least phoned you.

Depending upon the vessel size two piece shafts and stuffing boxes are not that uncommon.

Thanks for your response... The yard said they'd never seen a boat set up like that before and is offering no help in me having to haul again and pull the props and shafts again. Guy said it was like having your brakes done then complaining they didn't check the fuel filters... Not hardly...

I'm confused (not the first time) and curious. It sounds to me like the shaft exits the hull twice!? Any pictures?

Agreed, a picture of the setup would give us all a much better understanding of what you're dealing with (and what your options might be to resolve the issue).

I was thinking the same thing. How do the shafts exit the boat twice?

I think also that the hoses are called bellows.
