Hi, I’m buying a 52 with a Rocha 70 anchor. Will a Rocha 110 fit?Thanks

Rocna 70 or 110kg? Or are you talking pounds?

I doubt a 110kg will fit and also doubt that the windlass or rode would be adequate for that anchor.

70kg/154lbs is already a lot of anchor for that boat.

I meant Rocha model 110. In the original Rocha line it jumps from 70 to 110. Big jump. However, there is a Rocha mark II 80. I wonder if the 80 will fit? The Maxwell windlass should be able to handle that.

You mentioned that the Rocha 70 is good enough. Do you have actual experience with a 70 on a 100k lb 52? What size do you use on your 63? What anchoring experiences have you had with yours in high winds.

Regards,

Your right. I should. I didn’t because the boat is in contract but not in my name yet. But that shouldn’t matter.

No experience with Nordhavn’s

However, Guy with a Boat is correct - the Rocna 70 is already oversized. The 110 is literally off the chart for that size. Understand the Nordhavn might have more windage etc but their chart doesn’t even list it as an alternative for that size and weight of boat.

I too was concerned about whether I had enough anchor after I bought my first larger sized boat and wanted to increase everything. Dragging an anchor is almost a primal fear it seems. This fear and wanting to solve it with bigger ground tackle disappears with experience - well, the wanting to solve it part disappears but there is always that uncertainty which is where anchor alarms are so useful! . Anchoring technique and choosing the correct spots becomes far more important.

The other valid point mentioned is fit at the bow, whether your Maxwell 3500 windlass can pull the combined weight of the chain and anchor - I believe the rule of thumb is 1/3 of the capacity, which is the 3500 divided by 3.

I think if you are under contract they will admit you to the Nordhavn Owners Group (NOG) on yahoo groups. That is probably the best place for very specific questions.

I hope you stick around TF anyway!

I’m pretty sure you will need to close on the boat before joining the NOG, but I agree with Izzy that it’s the best place to ask. You will hear from people with first hand experience on those models.

I have the Rocna 70kg/154lb on my boat. We just hauled out today and it was 165k lbs on the lift.

I discussed the choices with Rocna via email before purchase and decided to go with their recommendation. No regrets so far with 6 years and 15K miles including two Alaska trips and a wide range of weather. There are also multiple 63s with the Rocna 110 (242lbs) since it fits and the windlass will handle it, so opinions vary. We also (63s) have 1/2” chain which I think is a size larger than usually found on a 52.

If I were setting up a 52, the debate for me would be between the 55 and the 70. The bigger one is already oversized and I wouldn’t go bigger if it were me.

Congrats on your pending purchase.

Yes, I found out that you have to close first but everyone seems in agreement that the 70 is more than adequate for a 100k N52. I’ll take the advice of everyone above. Thank you. FYI, the 52 has either a 7/16 or 1/2 inch chosen, probably 1/2 inch so that’s not a problem.

My 50 foot Farr 50 Pilothouse sailboat is close to 50k lbs loaded. It has a 77 lb spade and has never let me down even in less than ideal circumstances.
