I have an old Garmin 3206 with external GPS antenna. The chart plotter came with the boat, and the PO mentioned that occasionally he would lose GPS signal, which would come back after a short while. In the past 7 years this problem was getting worse and worse (GPS signal would be acquired less and less often and would stay on for shorter periods of time), until finally it's completely gone this year. I tried a new antenna and a new antenna cable, but it did not help. The last thing I am willing to try is the new data cable, but that requires some thinking (the cable colors are different from the original. Has any one had a similar problem? I did clean the electrical connections with a cleaner, but it did not work. The only thing that works on the plotter is the depth finder.
Is there any way to test the chart plotter itself? Did anyone have similar problem? I'm not willing to pay $400 for a used 3206 unless I know for sure what the problem is. Thanks!
