NMEA 2000 WiFi portal

Greetings electronics nerds, I know this is kind of a shot in the dark but I’m trying to find a fellow boater who has successfully added a NMEA 2000 wifi portal (like a WiFi gateway YDWG-02) to their system in order to access that hub’s info on their iPad through wifi, specifically for use on their Navionics program app. Thanks in advance.

I have a few separate N2K WiFi gateways. Works good for getting data on Navionics or Timezero on laptop. What specific questions do you have?

I use a Quark A036 It's an excellent gateway, I had some issues getting the Wifi to work correctly but I figured out it was a radio close by transmitting on the same frequency. Moved the radio and everything works as it should.

My goal as stated in the original thread was to simply add the YDWG-02 or equivalent in the N2K system. Then be able to pick up the data on my iPad. A couple of other responders make me think that I need a separate WiFi to re-transmit the data. Any thoughts?

I have done with the same unit. I use it with my laptop since it more powerful and a brighter screen. No Ipad. It took about 20 min. to set up and works just fine. No other device is needed.

My chart plotter (Simrad) is connected to ethernet on the boat. The same ethernet that a standard home us WAP is connected to. The Navionics app on my ipad will get depth and AIS info from the chart plotter with out an issue. Probably GPS data too but that's harder to be sure of since my ipad has it's own GPS.

Two caveats though;
1) Navionics wants you to have a navionics chip in the chartplotter for full synching.
2) The IPAD doesn't like being connected to a wifi that doesn't have an internet connection and will complain a time or two.

I have used the Yacht Devices gateways for several things but not the particular one you asked about. They have always worked well

+1 to the Yacht Devices gateway. I'm not sure exactly what NMEA data the #1 poster is seeking but the YD device works great.

To the question of whether separate WiFi is needed, the answer is no; the YD makes its own network. There are various apps that will display the data (nav apps and also ones like Sea IQ) or you can log in directly to a mini web server on the gateway device and view the data in rudimentary form in your iPad browser.

Our chartplotter (Simrad) and AIS transponder (Vesper Marine) both had WiFi as well as NMEA2000 connectivity.
