New member here. We are considering the purchase of a 36-42 trawler. Probably a Grand Banks. Have been boating for many years. Mostly Sail but most recently a 26 foot Fortier power boat. Very nice boat perfect for the Day long excursion, swimming fishing etc. Having turned 60 we are beginning to think about a more comfortable boat with short term live aboard capabilities. We have chartered a 36 and 42 GB several times in Florida and loved the boats.
The 36 was a single screw with the "typical" 8 not cruise. I understand that there is an adjustment in slowing down to about half of what I am used to cruising and think that I can except that. I like the simplicity of the single screw as I maintain my own boat / engine. I am looking at boats with the typical 135-180 hp diesels. My question is how is a 36 GB single screw in a moderate sea? Does it have the push to safely get us where we are going assuming it is running and propped correctly? I am talking about the typical chop and 2-4 foot seas that can be expected when cruising in normal conditions in and around Southern New England / Cape Cod and Islands.
