Just bought a 1981 38’Californian Trawler. Will be bringing her home to LA from SanFrancisco, hopefully sooner than later. I’ve quite a few years on the water including crossing oceans, but almost all of them on a sailboat so this will be a pretty steep learning curve. She has twin turbos and trim tabs, neither of which I have any experience with. How do I expedite the learning process? Hire someone to teach me onboard her in the Antioch Ca area before departure? Or take some kind of remote training elsewhere before going to get her? Or hire a crew member with experience to help bring her home in Feb or March? (Anyone interested)? Thanks!

I have a Hatteras 48LRC boat nearby Antioch in Discovery Bay but am currently in San Diego. Will send you a PM and we can talk.

For sure you need to run the boat and really test all the systems before making that trip. I may be able to help.

It is pretty easy. What engines do you have? With trawler speeds you likely won’t need trim tabs so just leave them retracted. Might use them in a beam wind to level the boat out. As to the turbos just run the engines at the speed you like. Probably at 7 to 9 knots for fuel economy.
