After searching high and low, trying to find a comfortable captain’s seat, I’ve found one. This seat is upholstered with UltraLeather which is very soft and smooth. The seat has an adjustable headrest, and adjustable armrests. The back can tilt for comfort. I used the base from my old seat that provides forward and back travel as well as rotation.
Sitting in this seat is unbelievably comfortable.

I had the canvas shop make me a footrest for added comfort when seated at the Pilothouse settee. I use a cushion behind my back and this “L” shaped footrest to relieve the pressure from under my knees when my feet used to dangle. Feels very comfortable now. It’s attached with Velcro.

That is slick! My early vintage hull 3 helm seat is "just" cushions on wood rather than a proper seat mounted to the cabinetry of the electrical panel and fridge enclosure. It is less than comfortable, especially in the long run. Amazingly, not a single one of the 1363 photos of the boat show the lower helm seat, but I'll be looking into the potential for an upgrade.

You could probably install a seat like this easily. The seat bases are pretty much universal. Just 4 bolts into the wood. Then add a slider base, with or without rotation. Cost for everything, including custom upholstery should be less than $3,000.

Does the bolster fold up?

Awesome - have been having similar thoughts. Great that you could use the existing base. Any cons? Could you provide details on the seat?

What is the make and cost of the seat? Llebroc and Stidd are stupid expensive. I ended up buying a truck seat for my second helm seat. I can buy 4 of these for the cost of my Llebroc helm seat.

I bought the seat from Arriginidesign.com. Talk to Chelso Arrigoni. (800) 235-2628.
The manufacturer sells the seat in an off white color only. Chelso sent my seat to a nearby canvas shop to be reupholstered in a complimenting color as we could not match the Helmsman blue leather material. I chose the UltraLeather product which is very soft and comfortable. I had the sliding headrest thickness reduced as it seemed to protrude a little too much when fully retracted.
This seat is so comfortable! I couldn’t believe it. My legs are fully supported like a seat in your car or truck. I’m having the canvas shop make me a 4” thick cushion to attach with Velcro to the footrest under the steering wheel. This because you legs don’t hang unsupported anymore and the footrest seems too low. Instead of raising the foot rest, I chose to have a pad made. I tested my idea by using the “L” shaped footrest I had made for the settee. See the photo above.
The back of the seat tilts forward and back and the arm rests adjust up and down or completely up and out of the way. They do not hit the window blinds when raised. The seat can rotate 90 degrees when slid fully forward. As I said, I used the existing seat base.
But, most importantly, this is probably the most comfortable seat I have ever sat in. Can’t wait for some typical 12+ hour passages we make. The cost of the seat with custom upholstery is $3,300- $3,500 plus shipping.

Very nice. Are they wider than 25”? I think that’s why Scott doesn’t use them in 38s.

That looks terrific.

And thanks for including the important detail of your feet no longer dropping down onto the foot platform.

Any reasonable suggestion to upgrade the starboard pilot seat on the American Tug 34/36?

Thank you all for this discussion. The standard helm seat has always been a slight concern for me since trying one at TrawlerFest. My large butt wants to slide forward off of that seat. I recently spoke with Chris Seevers at Helmsman who took one of the seats from the new 46 and placed it into a 43 to test its size. He reported that his only concern was that the slight increase in height may hinder the sight line out of the forward windows, and that this could be resolved by eliminating the swivel hardware (while keeping the slide function). Doing that would also prevent any modification or relocation on the foot rest.
The best news I received was that the yard had time to match my upholstery choice on a 46 seat and install it in my boat before it ships in the next few weeks! I suppose this will be a new option going forward. Thanx again everyone!

I heard a few boats are making it in this month - yours?

43044 and 43045 came to Charleston this week. Ours is 43046 and we are just waiting on completion of ours and 43047 so they can ship together. Hopefully soon.

Are you #1 or #2 out of the new yard?

Nice chair. Is it the low back Bolster or the high back Bolster?

Thanks for adding the information.
According to the information you provided, the starting price is $3,400. model Norsap 800.
I myself have a Norsap 1000 with the full controls in the side armrests which is very confordtable.

That is the high back. It doesn’t block vision at all. The adjustable headrest on the low back is too low to use. I had my headrest made thinner so it does not protrude as much. It was uncomfortable as it comes from factory.
You’re welcome to call me on my cell Irvin’s like more details.

Thank you. I will if I decide to go that direction.

I had Topside Canvas make a matching foot rest to go with my new seat that they upholstered with UltraLeather. A very comfortable combination.
I love my Helmsman 38E!
