1979 marine trader double cabin, my fly bridge steering is out, cable that holds chain together snapped, any suggestions welcome

String, twine, bungee, fishing leader. I have all those on board. Maybe nylon strap too. Be creative.

The description of the cable break could be a little more fulsome. Is there a length of cable either side of the break, or did the cable break at a thimble or simple loop? In either case, you can conduct a quick repair by using a short length of cable laid parallel to the break and fastened to the original cable with cable clips. Then when there is time and opportunity, replace the cable.
