MS-390 carrying a second anchor at the ready.

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

Totally agree with rslifkin. Not understanding why the anchor platform can’t take more weight. Did you mean you can’t fit a higher weight anchor (shank to long etc.)?
Because it bounces up and down with the anchor and water depth of chain hanging off. I can see it moving. I wouldn't put a heavier anchor on as it's probably not good for the platform and getting to the max of the windlass. Feel free to put whatever you like on yours.

The former owner of my boat had a 50 kg D'Hone anchor as a main anchor and kept a 30 kg D'Hone as a spare anchor.
When I changed to a 50 kg Sarca Excel I kept those 2 anchors on board as well. I thought they could be handy in case of.......
The ony time I used the 30 kg anchor was when we stayed in Kos Mandraki during the winter. The boat was sideways to the prevailing wind and so I dropped the 30 kg anchor off to starboard with a 40 mtr chain / rope connection. At the end of the winter I had to hire a diver to get the anchor back out of the soil, it was solid stuck.
We never had to use both spare anchors again, so in the end I gave the 50 kg anchor away to a family member and the 30 kg anchor is now in storage in a container.
My approach is now that if I would lose the main anchor it is definitely not my day. I can always retrieve the anchor since am using an anchor buoy with a 1200 kg break line attached to it. And if the chain would break it would mean that anchorage is not the place to be. We do have heavy storms in our sailing area, but I never had the need for a second anchor.
Must say that it creates space if you remove stuff off the boat that you basically don't need. Also had 2 spare props onboard, they are now also in the container. There is no way I will jump into the water to change the props myself, so we would need to come out of the water, I get in the a car, go pick up the props and drive back. At most that would be a 3 day drive, think that is acceptable.
You must have a very large boat. I was asking about a mainship 390.

To me that means the pulpit needs to be reinforced. Many boats are built with blatantly inadequate anchor handling gear unfortunately. But in my opinion it's not a good idea to limit anchor size due to an under-designed roller or under-sized windlass, it's much better to do something about the inadequate parts.

It's as-built. The problem is using inappropriately heavy tackle for the boat. Bigger is not always better. What i have is fully adequate. Just looking for the setup for quick deployment second anchor. Apparently everyone thinks its silly so ill just make up something that suits me and move on.

If your platform bounces up and down, you have bigger problems than a second anchor.

As built doesn't mean it's adequate. Unfortunately, many boats are built with the assumption that they'll never be anchored for more than a few hours in good weather, so no provision for adequate equipment is made.

My parents' boat is a Mainship 390, it has a 20kg rocna Vulcan primary anchor with 5/16" and 120' ish of chain and another 100' of rope. There is a fluke style anchor lashed to the railing on the fly bridge as a secondary anchor (I think a fortress but can't swear to it). The 20kg Vulcan is plenty of anchor for that boat in my opinion, it is a production coastal cruiser, not some circumnavigator. I have slept though a gale in a very protected anchorage but sustained 30 knots with gusts to 50 and actually managed some sleep. In extreme conditions, I would deploy a large flute style anchor because I wouldn't be able to sleep anyway. i would not be concerned about a fluke tripping under a reversed load, because in extreme conditions, I'm not doing to get much sleep anyway and would be checking frequently for changes in conditions. With the stairs, carrying a fortress anchor down from the flybridge is pretty easy. I believe it was primarily used in tight spots for a stern anchor when waiting for delayed bridge openings. The boat has looped at least once in this configuration and I really don't think it needs more anchor.

I was so impressed by the 20kg Vulcan on the 390 Mainship, that I bought the same for my boat. I will admit my boat is smaller and had a smaller wind profile. The Mainship 390 is a fine value boat, but the it's fiberglass layup is adequate but not any more than that. The bow pulpit flexes plenty pulling that relatively modest weight anchor and chain up, I wouldn't put any more stress on it and of course a bridle is well advised.

I have a 22lb Danforth rigged with 20ft of 5/16 chain and 150ft 5/8" three strand.
I also have a Fortress FX23 disassembled. Both stored in the lazerette in front of the sliding door.
22kg not LB.

I added a 35# CQR with a 35' chain on the second roller on my MS400. Went with a shorter chain so the capstan is more effective to raise it. It has worked out very well. I keep a 20# CQR with a long 3/8" chain in the lazarette In the event a stern anchor is needed.
Skip could you get a photo of the anchor setup? I have a 400 and was wondering how to do just that. Thanks
