Anyone found a good quality mattress topper that can be made or cut to size? Our master has a bed that tapers in at the "feet" end. Thanks

We purchased at Walmart and cut to size. This was 2-years ago for our v-berth. They carried two thicknesses - the thicker one was definitely better foam, not just thicker. Our sheets were custom made for the regular mattress so they are pretty tough to stretch over the v-berth now.

Good luck

Peter

In case you are new to cutting foam to weird boat angles, just know that it's easy. There are a few methods for cutting, from "worst" to best. Worse just means the cut will be a bit lumpy along the sides. No functional difference though in the end.

1) If it's around 2" or less thick, you can use scissors.

2) Pretty much any thickness you can use a bread knife.

3) An electric turkey knife will make a very nice cut; you just don't have the ideal angle control that you'd have with a professional foam cutting tool.

4) Pro foam cutting saw (this is sort of like a jigsaw married to a band saw, in portable form).

There may be other ways. I have used #1, #2, and #3 and all worked fine. Turkey knife makes the nicest cut by far of the first three methods. If you want to make a cut with just the right angle (and don't have the #4 saw), you can use a Sharpie line on the top, and the edge of a work-table on the bottom (purposely mis-aligned to create the angle). Just don't use a good table without protection.

Likely #1 or #2 will be just fine for a topper though (or you can buy a cheap electric turkey knife pretty easily).

We bought a topper at Costco (king size). It's pretty thick and came compressed as most do. We are quite pleased with it. After it expanded I doubt I could get it back out without cutting it up.

YachtBedding.com makes a great topper with exquisite cover and fitted sheets available. Also $$$$. Did that for one boat with extremely unusually shaped (and hard) mattress, and loved it.

On current boat, the mattress is close to standard, so I went with Frosty's approach #3: oversized topper cut down to fit with turkey knife. Happy with it!

We have 2” memory foam toppers on all of our beds. I use an electric knife to cut them to shape and size. The forward berth in our boat has a lot of curves to cut and also the angle on the hull sides. The electric knife did a great job.

Jim, we had our boat shipped without a mattress. Bought a Sealy memory foam mattress and cut it to size with a bread knife. I took my time and it came out fine. Very comfortable.

We've ordered from The Foam Factory and have been very satisfied.

Most larger metropolitan areas will have 1-2 small businesses that make mattresses. There’s a mom & pop (& kids) shop in Sacramento that did a great job for me. They tossed different foams on the floor of their shop until I was happy with the combination, glued them, cut them to my template and put it in a quilted cover. Very happy 5 years later.

The mattress toppers are okay, but we've found most of the foam ones are too "hot" to sleep on. We looked into getting a Purple mattress made to fit our berth (we have one at home and love it), but this turns out to be basically impossible. So I'm looking for alternatives which don't leave us alternately sweating and freezing while also being reasonably comfortable (e.g. not hard as a piece of plywood).

OP here. We ordered a 3" memory foam topper from amazon and cut it to fit. I like it fairly well, definitely an improvement over the one that came with the boat. Could it be better? Probably, but this will get us by for a while.

We are looking at a boat in Portland this week, and the broker claims it has a $70,000 mattress. I was flabbergasted until he said owners wife was ill so he wanted the best for her...still that is super yacht pricing to me.

$7,000 I can believe.

I ordered an 8” memory foam mattress from Amazon for $244 and a 3” memory foam topper for $40. Glued them together and then cut it to fit with an electric knife. We love it. Certainly cheaper than even $7,000.

When I win the lottery, my next boat will have that $7K mattress and that $12K Stidd helm chair!

I was cleaning out my shed today. I have a Stidd helmseat that I am going to put out at the street this weekend with a Free sign on it. Tired of it sitting in the shed.

@Comodave Can you list that on the forum? I am sure someone would be happy to pick it up!

I really don’t want to mess around with it. I could probably sell it but I just want it gone ASAP.
