Somewhat like the old DOS days, it looks like Garmin displays only the first 15 characters of the route name I exported from Navionics. I have yet to find a way to customize the list view, so it looks like I need to be more creative with naming routes. What do you guys do?

I am creative with my names. The first digit is A, B, or C to denote the region. The second digit is a number to order my routes from south to North. Then a space, then a port start abbreviation and finally a port finish abbreviation.

When I had Raymarines on my last boat I abbreviated place names to five letters and put a dash between them, which leaves 4 characters for dates when planning multi day routes.

I used to save all the routes, but according to Raymarine my 'cache' was too full, so I deleted all the routes. Now, after finishing the route I simply delete absolutely everything. If that prevents the Axiom from freezing up then that is what it will be. Pity, but that is the way it is.

I’ve noticed Garmin has a 100 route limit. Silly in this era when memory is so cheap. I’m guessing that the answer is to archive the .gpx files on a computer and move them on or off the plotter as needed. I think that approach will make it okay to live with the 100 route limit.

Naming and managing way points and routes is one of the reasons I use a PC rather than a MFD. I used to need to keep hundreds of routes and be able to recall them over years.

That was me, back to your needs. I see your list all start with "Battery Park to". Clearly Battery Park is a familiar name. I suggest "BP 2.....". You will have condensed 15 characters to 4 leaving more characters for the remainder of the route name.

BP-xxxx (however many Xs necessary for destination).

The screenshot of my Garmin 943 was the first import of my routes from Navionics. I have since modified the pattern with a trip header and abbreviations that fit in those first 15 characters. So far, so good. Thanks for the ideas, folks.

Using the tilde key ~ will bring things to the top, without a lot of renaming.

I like that; bubble the active routes to the top of the list as needed. I don't see a way to do that on the plotter though. Is there no way to edit route names on the plotter itself? It looks like that can only be done by editing in ActiveCaptain and re-synching the changes to the plotter.

I use (long obsolete) Garmin HomePort on my MS laptop to create and manage tracks and routes. On my SD card, I have MANY "folders" of routes and tracks. The 'folders" are created for specific regions and specific trips I have made. The routes and tracks in the folders are named beginning, "2" and destination. I use abbreviations... A route from my home to a local marina (Blue Water Marina) would be Home2BlueWM

[ Dest fr Begin ]

Normally, I show route destination first then fr (=from) the Point of Beginning of that route... abbreviating every time. I rarely keep my routes more that a day or two after they've been travelled.

IF I am planning a whole week (only on occasion) and IF I care what order they show up in ((typically so my wife or others can make sense of a screen shot of our plan)), THEN I might put a 1- 2- 3- prefix.
