Does anyone know the weight of the lazarette hatch on a 1970 GB32? I would like to put a pair of gas struts on it to help open it, help close it and keep it open without having to lean it on the rear railing.

Have you asked on the PUget Sound Grand Banks association? There are some 32’s on that. Easy to join on Facebook. We have a GB 36 Classic 1989 so aren’t much help. Look for Jeff Kelety. He has a 32..berths in Port Townsend as do we.

I am a member, but haven't ask there yet. I tend to like the larger community mind of Trawler Forum, but will pose the question FB today

Not direct answer, but may help. When I got the current boat the hatches felt 50lbs heavy assisted by 60lb struts. I replaced them with 100lb struts. Now I unlatch, give it a 2-3 inch pull and they open all the way by themselves.

This information helps a lot. Thanks SteveK

I have done exactly that on my GB36. In my case the hatch was devided into three seperate ones. I Built a single hatch and installed it without gas struts. I then weighed the hatch in its almost closed position, and together with the hatch dimensions I contacted Stabilus, who built two gas struts, and gave me the instructions for installation. Not only do you want to know the capacity of the struts but also the exact positions to install them. Stabilus will give you that critical information.

I don't know the weight of your hatch but we purchased struts for our engine hatches and they are great. It's one of the best things we've done for ease and safety.

This may be rather simplistic thinking but why can’t you buy a small spring load scale (think weighing a fresh caught fish) and attach to the lazarette lifting handle and lift it open. That scale should give you the lifting weight that would in turn give you the strut capacity needed. And of course also upscale that so it’s just a quick lift to get it to rise magically as SteveK says.

A whole new meaning to it was this big (arms outstretched)
This will work.
