Hi folks,

We have been looking at a 2001 Kady Krogen 39 as a potential purchase. With the John Deere, 4045TFM50 engine. The advertisement says it will cruise at 7 knots to a maximum speed of 10 knots, but I'm not sure if this sounds a little bit like hyperbole, as most of the literature I have seen suggests a maximum hull speed of 8 knots.

We are not expecting to cruise the boat at 10 knots, but coming from a faster trawler (American Tug 34) Will be adapting a more gentle pace. It would be nice if we could occasionally run faster for short periods to outrun, weather etc., but most of the time I would like to see us cruising along at around 7.5 knots. I will be interested in what the Trawler Forum hive-mind has to say on this one!

Many thanks in advance for your consideration

Regards, Bernies

In test conditions you can probably reach 10 knots but in actual cruising conditions you will most like be slightly over 9. The difference in fuel burn will likely be three times what it is at 7 knots

I had a Krogen Manatee. I knew of one guy that replaced the 100 hp engine in his Manatee with a much higher hp engine (I dont recall hp). All it did was suck the stern down and fill his cockpit with water. There are calculations you can do to determine hull speed for the full displacement 39. I would be surprised if you could get to 9 knots fully loaded.

I sold my AT34 and bought a Nimbus 305. We can choose a cruise speed between 8 to 22 knots and enjoy exceptional comfort and fuel economy from a single 270hp diesel. Check out the larger model 365.

Hi, kk39 It is LWL 36.67 ft, so your hull speed is about 8 knots, no more. Your most economical speed is about 6 knots, and a reasonable speed vs. consumption is 7 knots. 9 knots huge consuption and wave.
