Is this maneuver real?

I believe I have seen a Russian jet do that but not next to a carrier. It has that kind of thrust and stability but not to the point where I think a sane pilot would do it that close to water/ground/large object. However if I recall the video correctly it did almost hover, part way down a runway but pretty high above the ground.

That looks like one of those simulations from a war game. Would be surprised if what I remember was also an excellent simulation or a distant shot of a really nice RC (remote control) aircraft

Looks like the video equivalent of Photoshopped. At the very beginning where he does the tail stand between the two ships, I don’t see any water disturbance from the jet wash. I’m no expert, but ???

Video game. not even a very good one. Ever see a carrier deck with no people?

An F22 did something similar during the Seafair air show a few years ago, right by the log boom. It was like a science-fiction thing, but real. Way more impressive than the Blue Angels show later on.

It’s a computer game. Click bait.

Nope this is not real and nor will it ever be. This is just a video game. In order to turn the plane around and keep it balanced while it is basically standing on its tail you would need a lot more thrust control and that is simply not available. Also makes me wonder why you would want to do this maneuver, it doesn't bring you anything, it just costs you a lot of payload.

Can a jet hang on its engines and then go vertical? Yes. Can it hover like a helicopter and use its ailerons to maneuver? Only if it has engine bleed air surfaces. While there several fighters that can do tail stands with vector thrust, I am not familiar with any that can use bleed air surfaces to maneuver while at a dead stop.

Seriously??? That jet video is so CG. Heck, that cruise ship going over Niagara Falls looks more real

That is how the Harrier was controlled. Had bleed air outlets on the wings, tail, nose which would open and close in order to have direction control when the plane was in a hover.

In the first shot, when the plane first comes in, didn't you notice that when it was tail standing directly over the water . . . . the water wasn't disturbed at all . . . . CG all the way

Nice RC model, they make them look very real nowadays.
Are you sure? Pretty serious simulation with people and even their clothes moving. Plus a pretty large target down range with people in the foreground.

The Russians have been playing with thrust vectoring for awhile. If a pilot was brave/stupid enough to try it at low altitude.....

No different for an aircraft with a higher thrust to weight ratio and a tall, skinny rocket with vectored thrust.

You are correct, I just mentally put the harrier in a different class of aircraft.

The Harrier caused some perplexed faces back in the time. In a dog fight it could stop on a dime (at the cost of all the energy it had though), but I remember a nice one on GCA final back in the 80's. The idea is that the controller 'talks' the aircraft down to a landing and obviously you need to fly a constant speed and descent rate.
So here comes the Harrier, but when asked which type of aircraft it was the pilot answered AV8 and for some reason the controller did not catch on. Obviously in the pattern it flew the normal speeds, well above that of any helicopter, but once established on final the pilot started slowly reducing his speed to well below that of any fighter. That did cause some panic with the controller who, for a moment, thought the plane was going to crash.

The computer graphics are amazing these days. Check out this Red Storm Rising chapter by FIXEDIT. You can plan and play out almost anything.
