My apologies if this has already been discussed but with an insurance market rapidly evolving, was wondering if anyone has had issues with insurance companies rejecting or "limiting coverage" for Trawlers with Lithium battery banks (LiPo4)? I obviously disagree with this position because LiPo4 is so safe, but I am seeing this pop up on some youtube channels (see O'Kelly's) https://youtu.be/I6DiY1h02a8
Perhaps Peter can chime in or other insurance professionals?
If this is true, this would cause a lot of issues.....
Just doing some due diligence prior to battery bank replacement.

I use an insurance broker that accesses multiple insurers. I recently asked this question, since I am shopping for LFP now, and got the following response:

"One company has said they aren’t excluded in the policy, but that when a claim happens they would have to divert the decision on coverage over their Claim’s Dept. (Seems rather wishy-washy to us.)

Another company is requiring LifePO4 technology. Requiring professional US based installation and manufacturer must be US based. They would limit the amount of liability and hull coverage, which would make your boat ineligible for coverage. They also would increase the rate.

You are currently with Travelers. They have not expressed concerns, to date.

This seems to be an evolving issue as the companies have claims as well as more people installing them."

I think I will stay in ABYC compliance and use a reputable installer and take my chances.

I have been shopping like crazy for insurance for cruising a trawler from the USA to New Zealand. Not one of the brokers or forms has asked about lithium batteries.

I’ve encountered questions about propane systems, watch schedules, drogues & sea anchors, construction materials, generators, backup propulsion, and all sorts of other stuff. Nothing about lithium.
