Hi đź‘‹

I have been wanting to install a composing toilet and completely remove the black water holding tank and classic boat head toilet.

The install for the composting toilet looks very straight forward but I have no idea where to begin dismantling the old toilet or if it's safe to do so while on the water.

Has anyone else done this and can you suggest any videos or resources that would help me?

Thanks all, safe boating 🙂

Your existing toilet probably has a fresh water supply line. You will need to depressurize and cap it off. Existing toilet has a waste discharge hose, perhaps 1.5". It usually leads to a holding tank. Disconnect and cap it off. Now remove the toilet and install your composting toilet.

Not a fun job but the last time you'll have to deal with sewage lines onboard. You might have the holding tank flushed if possible before capping it off assuming you're not removing it entirely. It's yucky but pretty straightforward work. Figure out in advance how you're going to cap those lines - I removed them and capped them at the tank itself.

The composting toilet install is pretty straightforward, but do your measurements and make sure you have a plan for the vent hose in advance.

Assuming you have operable valves on the thru-hulls, you can remove everything and replace the interior barbed nipple where the hoses attached with a plug. As further safety, remove the handles on the valves to prevent accidental opening. At your next haul, remove the thru hull penetrations and glass over.

I went with a Nature's Head compost head. I wouldn't go back but it's not the Nirvana sailors extoll. A power vent is not optional in my opinion.

Excellent advice provided.
Will add my installation experience.

After flushing the holding tank and discharge hoses, kept almost the whole length of the discharge hose out the way, as a precaution in case didn't work for me
(very happy and will not go back) but also in case need to sale the boat and the new owner wants to redo.
