I have a question for the forum. I am interested in getting a 30-40ft trawler for 50-150mi+ trips. I read in this thread

that 32-36ft trawlers could easily be had obtaining in excess of 2mpg economy, assuming using what I was led to believe was an easy to find, single engine design with roughly 100hp, or less.
I am not able to find such a boat. I am looking to spend 15-30k, there are plenty of boats for sale under trawlers in this range, most are twin engine, 165hp and up, most in the 220-300hp range.
As in the above thread, I am looking to cruise at hull speed (~7-8knots) and achieve maximum fuel economy. 3+mpg would be great.
 
If you're focused on Fuel Burn, then I wouldn't be too fixated on HP. Finding a boat in the 32-36 ft range AND under 100 HP is going to be a challenge.

Don't focus on MPG. Focus on Gallon Per Hour (GPH). Running with a 2+knot tide or current vs against a 2 knot tide or current is going to radically fluctuate your MPG estimates. This isn't a car. In a boat distance divided time is a variable, not a constant.

The boat for you sounds like a Gulfstar 36 trawler. American built, very spartan and very high mileage. Perfect for 50-150 miles and smack dab in the middle of your price range.

There are a lot of 32-36 single engine displacement boats. The problem might be your price range. Are you looking for turn key or a project?
 
To the OP, don't worry about the fuel efficiency for 50 to 150 mile trips. The cost of dockage, insurance, and maintenance on a $30K boat will likely be 70 to 90% of your annual boat budget.

Anyway... Many of the models offered with both single- and twin-engine ended up with appropriate horsepower... which sometimes meant the twins were each smaller engines (than the singles) and total hp was still appropriate for the boat. Example: single 300 or twin 165s. (I'd have guessed singles with 100 hp or less engines would have been rare.)

A 36' "trawler" will likely have something like a 34' waterline length... which in turn means max theoretical hull speed will be in the neighborhood of 7.8 kts... and better fuel economy would actually be closer to maybe 6½ kts. If total average GPH are ~3 or so... that'd be in the neighborhood of 2 NMPG. MANY boats will be able to do that, without regard to how many engines their using to do it. Many can better that.

So it's not how many HP the boat has; instead it's how many HP the operator uses.

I have 25hp and average 10nm to the gallon. Mooring, haul out and launch, insurance cost about $1400.00 annually, I do all the maintenance myself.

Agree with O C Diver.

In addition, for 50-150 mile trips.... buy a fast boat. The difference in cost and the difference in time can be at least a day on both ends while the fuel bill won't be huge as suggested against getting places you want to go that * or less knots just doesn't cut it.

I enjoy 6 knots, but after many, many boat trips from 6-30 knots.... you generally see about the same amount of thing if attentive.

Unless you plan on these trips lasting weeks or more, then something that is "trawler like" is really overkill.
 
I dont think fuel is a real factor i would be looking at. Fuel is my lowest expense. My big cost are boat tabs,insurance and moorage that run about 16k a year. dockage and maintenance run another 6k. Not trying to discourage you but i would study reliability and other cost that might accompany a particular boat. Ease of maintenance is a big one for me. I see some engine rooms that look just scary to work in. I could be wrong but i think the fuel consumption at below hull speed is going to about the same depending on the length of the boat.
 
Hi I am new here from Vancouver thinking of buying a 34 foot chb for 30 000 guy said it has a small leak at the back
I have been reading stories that all these boat will have wood rote and need major repairs ?
That along with water and fuel tanks ?
It’s a 1980 single engine
Was going to park it at a marina and live in it full time ..
But now worried .. any advice
