I am in process buying a trawler with a Lehman 6 cylinder. The seller says its a 120hp. The marine mechanical surveyor said it might be a 135hp. He indicated there is no definitive way to tell the difference. His reasoning was it has a chrome cover plate on the front of the engine. It seems there has to be a way to correctly ID the motor. The hull is from 1978 and fairly sure motor is original.
Thanks,
Bill

Welcome aboard. The guru on the Lehmans is Brian at American Diesel. He is awesome to work with. 804-435-3107

Serial number on the block... I had a frankenstien engine in my trawler.

The original engine was a 135, but it was replaced with a 120 long block fitted with many adapted 135 parts including the chrome valve cover.

Drove American Diesel and me nuts for 2 years trying to figure it out and replace parts.

My serial number was behind the injection pump and covered by a hose so no matter where I looked, I couldn't find the ser number until I removed that hose.

My 135 has a number plate directly above the heat exchanger. The engine designation for a 135hp is a 2725E which is stamped in the upper right hand corner of the plate

Yes, just in front of the bell housing and above the heat exchanger is a fairly large ID plate riveted to the block. It contains information about the engine build and the engine model number. 2725 is a 135. 2715 is a 120.

Look at the front of the engine looking back. On the 135, the belt is on the outside of all the hoses which makes for an easier change if needed. First picture.

On the 120, the belt is routed behind the cooling hose under the header to the water pump. Second picture.

I would be concerned about a surveyor asserting that there is no way to tell the difference. Any Lehman owner can tell the difference at a glance.
