Hello trawler people!

First post here. I’m looking to educate myself a bit more before pulling the trigger on my first trawler...
I previously owned sailboats and currently own a Brig RIB for local stuff. I’m planning to get into the trawler community within the next 12 months, once work slows down a bit. Looking to spend 3-6 months per year on board, moving all the time!

Cheers,
Pierre

Welcome aboard the TF, Pierre. Lots of reformed sailors have washed up on this forum, including moi. If you can make sailboats go where you want them to, you'll find trawler-style yachts a piece of cake. That's why sail training exists at the U.S. Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and Naval Academies.

Welcome from a fellow Canuck in TO. I sailed for years and currently own a 37 sailboat and a Cruiser 46 that trawls around a lot. Going from Sail to Power is easier in my opinion vs. the other way around :)

Pierre,
Welcome aboard TF. You are in a perfect location to take advantage of the extensive fresh water cruising in the NE.

Welcome to the place where the term "beating to windward" converts to just another of the 360 degrees of the compass you can STEAM. :)

Fellow Canadian trawler owner here - welcome to the group. Happy to share any information that can be helpful to you.

Welcome aboard!

I am in the same boat as you and am based in BC. Good luck on your search for the perfect trawler!

Depending on your abilities and such, you might be interested in some of the courses that Canboat / Power Squadrons offer. I took the Navigation and Boat Handling program and it was great to get a real understanding of navigation, down to paper charts - also met a lot of fantastic people through the course. (I took mine through the North Shore Squadron -- Learn Boating North Vancouver | North Shore Power Squadron)

Welcome aboard. Made the switch ourselves and never looked back! Too many windless summer months here in BC!

Welcome from ex sailors (Pearson 31-2), now on a 370 Carver Voyager in the North Channel, Ontario.

One odd thing we found about power boats (other than no sails LOL) is that boats with lots of glass to look out of are way hotter than a sailboat. Plan for air conditioning units and light coloured window coverings for all your windows or you will think you are living in a greenhouse.

We were in the north channel last year, put in Gore Bay and had a nice time through to Killarney. The problem or issue we had was the range of our present gasser boat, 50 nm. The diesel boat we purchased recently has a range of 200nm. We will be back to do longer runs and extended stays!

Welcome aboard. This forum is a great place to get a ton of information. Sailing can be great, but I think trawlers are the way to go for a more relaxing time. Nothing like drinking your coffee and relaxing at the wheel when the weather is cold and messy outside instead of being knee deep in cold warm from the waves coming into the cockpit. Makes me feel spoiled every time...

Welcome! It’s your turn to buy the, bring money
