I have a Grand Banks 32 and the slide that holds the center window at the helm slips. The clamp to hold it cannot be tightened any further because the rod thickness does not allow tightening. I had this same problem on my GB 42. Anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve this?

Can you get the slide apart? If so you might be able to line the slide with something to take up the slack. Or maybe drill a hole in the side of the clamp where the fore and aft tube is and then weld a nut over the hole. Then screw in a thumb screw to tighten up the clamp.

I would suggest pulling the window brace rod out and filing or grinding it down so you have more room to tighten the thumbscrew. It probably won’t take much.

You guys over engineer stuff. Buy a
"Suicide knob" for a steering wheel, clamp it on the rod inboard of the factory one and just use that. Rod too small ? Heater hose.

Filing down the existing rod is over engineering? It’s too thick for it to clamp properly. The clamp is probably a little misshapen from overtightening too many times as well. So, file the rod end, or reshape the clamp. No need to add any extra stuff.

It’s a little funky, but we just put a small hose clamp on the pipe and keep a 5/16th hut driver (like a screw diver but with a socket on the end) handy up on the dash. It has never slipped when tightened!

On my GB 36, someone before me cut a nylon fabric square to wrap around the slide bar, and fit the clamp over it. It is a simple hack and really works quite well. It is a sleeve/shim essentially.

On my GB36, the slide had the same problem. A small piece of extra fine sand paper cut to the diameter of the rod & the length of the slide, rolled onto the rod then under the sliding piece always worked great. You need a piece of 400 grit or greater so the paper itself is very thin. Easy fix, works great.
