Has anyone here replaced the heat exchanger core on an older Perkins? I'll be doing it in the next few days and am planning the logistics. Question is whether I am likely to be successful on the boat or if I am going to need workbench, a press, and other shop tools. The Perkins people say the tube bundle will come right out but looking in at a 43 year old component, I'm skeptical.

Greetings,
Mr. RL. I can't comment specifically on your planned task but in general, it's usually much easier to work on something "on the bench" as you're probably aware. IF, and it's a BIG if, you can remove the HE without making too much extra work or creating unneeded extra expense (damage to gaskets/hoses etc.) I would take that sucker right off but that's just me.

Just checked your "spot" location and it seems you're in Ft. Myers where you may not have access to your "home bench" so I suppose the best in these circumstances may be to give it a try "in situ" and worry about complications later...

I have rodded a couple of heat exchangers to get remove the internal buildup. One had straight tubes, the other had tubes with a U turn which made rodding a challenge but never the less, I was able to free the passages. Something to consider trying if you cannot find a replacement.

I just got clarification from Perkins and it is easy on these engines. The tube bundle and housing are one unit. It just unbolts and slides out.

I see that you might be in Fort Myers, “near” Marinatown. I’m currently docked here and have a car if you need anything.

Progress. It came right out, just like TAD said it would.
