Knowing our friends on the east of the Pacific navigate the coast, and Mexico is visited, is it now the Gulf of Mexico or the Gulf of America for navigation purposes?

On Google it's Gulf of America but on recently uploaded national agency free nautical chart download it came up with this (at least one electronic (ENC) chart).

Either name shouldn't really confuse anyone.... pretty obvious where someone is discussing navigating a body of water. Lot's of places are/have been called by different names.

Well, as always.... staying on top of progress is critical for knowledge and wisdom.

Just tried the USA's NOAA chart viewer and found this.....

Still agree with what I and Ted posted..... BFD. As the old adage goes.... what's in a name.

The answer seems obvious: "Gulf of the Americas". But that only works if one is actually looking for an answer.

All I meant by it was what I saw yesterday (or even a few moments ago) may not be true today.

Something many internet posters don't really grasp the way they hold to beliefs that are no longer or really neve were true.

OP asked “….for navigation purposes”.

If you are using Google Maps for navigation purposes, 🤷‍♂️
In satellite view, Google maps can be pretty handy in shallow, clear waters...... then again as I mentioned before.... not sure in navigation I cared about location names most of the time.

If they can change Mt McKinley to Mt Denali then they can change anything they like.

Doesn’t mean Mexico has to change their maps.

Reportedly...... it may go back to Mt McKinley. :banghead:

Please don’t start with this stuff.
I`m genuinely interested how it works in navigation. There are a lot of charts, paper, SD, etc to consider. And there are vessels transiting from all over the world, with varying English standards, as well as "locals"
I mused, if the Great Australian Bight, stretching from the Australian west coast to Adelaide, and part of the Great Southern Ocean, was renamed, there could be issues.
But if people are unhappy, I don`t mind if a Mod closes the thread. I`ll even report it if I can.
Edit: Reported.

Google (and others) have merely taken the easy way out.

If you want to protest their fold, Google "gulf of mexico", then when " gulf of america" pops up, click on the three vertical dots to the right. From there, report it as incorrect info and make the notation that the proper name is the gulf of mexico.

I don't sea the fuss.

Don't some of us call the Antarctic Ocean the Southern Ocean, the Sea of Japan the East Sea and the Gulf of California the Sea of Cortez?

Whats the big deal over one more double named body of water?

In EU boat name shown. EU must force google, facebook and other to sell EU part buisnis to local companies or ban them from eu market like tiktok USA haahhaahah

It will be interesting to see if the name change lasts 5 years.
Maps, charts and mariners have used last week's name for 500 years.
soon Trump horse be declared senator of the USA and minister of immigration. If Croatia put 25% tariff on imports 90% population be dead in 1 year. This tariff we be in 1980-ti like now in USA import tariff 10-50% we finish in war and collapsed economy. Without American tourist, I am dead in 3-4 year. Off topic irrelevant posts like #20 above tend to validate post #3 of Comodave, and six supporters.

what is different changing name of sea Gulf of Mexico in Gulf in America vs declaring Trump horse be vice president of USA. I don't see any difference. For me this is hilariously funny.

I'll just refer to the body of water as the 'Gulf of Mexico Emeritus'...
My favourite reply.

The most baffling reply

I find this all very humorous. When I was going to Brazil quite a bit for business I quickly learned that saying you were from America didn't mean USA to them as they considered themselves from America too, South America.

If you're navigating the region, hopefully your skill level is high enough that it shouldn't matter what it's called. When I crossed from Panama City to Tarpon Springs, the name of the Gulf didn't seem to have any meaningful bearing.

Ted
Excellent point. In my younger years Mt. Mckinley was changed to Denali as you may recall. Not that I have ever been there but it meant squat. Over the years I became familiar with the name Denali. Changing it back to Mt. McKinley also means squat. Something that big I will know exactly what it is even if named say "Clyde".
