Very interesting to put it down as it's own purely Canadian loop.
The cruising season is nearly 7 months long, practical though 5 1/2. The old adage that there is 10 months of winter and two months of piss poor sledding is not accurate. The Great Lakes generally have nice weather and low winds for July through August and the second half of September through the beginning of October. For some reason the wind seems to blow a lot the first two weeks of September and then calm down again. June is a fickle month in the open waters of the Great Lakes but okay in more protected waters of the route. May is exceptionally rainy and foggy. May showers bring June flowers instead of April showers bring May flowers. Fall is usually a dry season.
The Canadian loop ignores three side trips that are hard to ignore. One is the side trip to Mackinaw Island. The second is the side trip to the Lake Erie Islands and Cedar point and the third is the side trip of the Western Erie Canal vs the Welland Cannal. The Western Erie Canal has mostly been free for a number of years and is the cheapest amenity packed cruising you will ever do. Bridge clearances are around 16', 4.8m.
