Problem is many of us continue to think we’re 35. Old enough to know something. Beyond wanting just sex but rather finding joy in making love. Able to finagle our way around or through just about anything. Having enough self confidence to do the “right”thing in keeping with our ethical/moral beliefs even when it’s goes against the current trend or popular thinking. Less concerned with what others think and more concerned abstracting the validity of all opinions. Enhanced ability to divide opinion from fact.
Where we separate is some lose the flexibility in thought. They become unable to admit they were wrong, unable to truly apologize, unable to to see thy acted badly. Some realize the need for a balanced life is more important then mammon. People make you happy not things. Things are only tools to allow you to have good experiences and are not goals in themselves. So you end up with bitter, resentful old men who think everything is someone’s else’s fault. Or thoughtful centered old men who strive to continue to learn and be engaged in the world.

One of my favorites....lines out of the movie "The Guardian"

Ben Randall : When the heck did we get old?

Maggie McGlone : Hell, I've always been old Ben. Ya' know what though, I don't mind. I mean if my muscles ache, it's because I've used 'em. It's hard for me to walk up them steps now, its 'cuz I walked up 'em every night to lay next to a man who loved me. I got a few wrinkles here and there, but I've layed under thousands of skies with sunny days. I look and feel this way, well cuz I drank and I smoked. I lived and I loved, danced, sang, sweat and screwed my way thorough a pretty damn good life if you ask me. Getting old ain't bad Ben. Getting old, that's earned

My grandmother gave me a piece of advice many years ago, she said the trick to enjoying your life is not to surround yourself with dull people.

As time goes by I think she was on to something.
