Hello All,

Been lurking here for some time and think it's finally time to introduce ourselves. We have been boating on Lake Michigan, out of Chicago, for over 20 years. Currently in a Cruisers 45 Cantius which is our 4th. Getting close to a decision on our next boat which will be a used trawler in the 50-60 ft. range. Retiring soon and the plan is to spend most of our time traveling on the next boat. The tentative plan is to start on the East Coast/Bahamas/Caribbean (assuming we purchase a boat located on the East Coast) and follow the weather for a couple years. After that? We have ideas but we'll figure that out later.

Our experience on Lake Michigan has taught us just enough to be aware that there is so much that we don't know about our future cruising grounds or operating and maintaining a boat that will be very different from what we've known. That's not to mention the lifestyle which I think we just have to experience to know whether we love it as much as we believe we will. We really appreciate and have learned much from the members of TF who so generously share their knowledge and experience. We have also; been reading books, checking out some of the many YouTubers, attended a couple Trawler Fests with full seminar schedules, and attended a Trawler School run out of Traverse City MI. Seems that we just keep learning that there's more that we don't know. Expect that doesn't end.

Thank you for listening! We look forward to participating more actively on TF in the future. For the time being, I'm afraid our participation will be limited to questions, a couple of which I'm going to look for the right place to post right now.

Best,
Mike

HI Mike,

If you find the time to write about it, I'd love to hear about your experience with the Traverse City Trawler School. I've been wanting to get some first hand reports about it.

Traverse City, MI...brings fond memories from my youth, a family vacation in the fall when I was about 8 years old. Traverse City Motel, right on the beach. Even better back then as chubs were plentiful and cheap and Pops and I loved them. Ate 'em right in the room off the butcher paper - :)

Welcome aboard, have fun and thanks for bringing back a fond memory - :)

We thought the trawler school was very good. The instructors were knowledgable and did a good job. The material is good. In the classroom setting plus testing for certification, it really forces you to go through the material in detail. We were most interested in the on the water time as I didn't have any single screw experience and my wife liked the idea of getting time at the helm with someone other than me providing the instruction. A lot of close quarter practice and different docking maneuvers in addition to time on the lake for basic navigation and operation. All in all, particularly for someone with little or no experience, I think they do a nice job. My wife definitely came away from it with more confidence at the helm. Fire away if you have any questions.
