Greetings! I posted a little while back about being new to the forum and that my father and I were in the market for a 45 - 55 ft boat, and that we had our eyes on one. Original thread Original post here.

Fast forward to now, where we've taken ownership as of 5/8. Here's the boat listing for those who asked. It's a solid boat with a lot of great qualities. In my thread I mentioned how I felt the broker was being shady and we were unsure if we wanted to move forward with an offer. Well, I was wrong. After communicating with the previous owners via email back and forth, and hearing from the others who have serviced the boat, we quickly learned that the previous owners were quite a handful. (Respectfully, the boat had a lot of sentimental value as it had been in their family for 30 years.) We now know that there was a lot of behind the scenes dynamics that the broker did a great job of doing of navigating, and doing what he felt was best for both parties. We provided the broker with our 'wants' and 'would be nice to haves' and he provided a boat that fit the bill.

We've made one short run from Pleasant Harbor to Port Townsend (roughly 5ish hours) where we currently have the boat on the hard as we sand and repaint the bottom. We were fortunate enough that the previous owner had a project scheduled with the electrician (to install a new Victron inverter) - and she was fabulous about making sure we totally understood all of the systems. She even allowed us to perform some of the work to save on labor! The engine mechanic has also been around and super helpful. Everyone supporting us has been really patient.

As with any boat, we have some repairs to make, but we're excited for this endeavor and are excited to make it 'ours'.

We've meet some really great people already and even meet the current owners of "the sibling" of this boat (one of the 5 OA's that were stretched and repowered at the same time). Thanks for everyone's support!

She looks great! Mine is '82, and there are some minor differences during the 1979-83 production run, but they are all wonderful cruising vessels. If you have any questions then ask here on TF, or on the (private) Ocean Alexander Mark 1 Family facebook group that you've now been added to as an owner.

Thanks! We were invited the Mark 1 Family FB group and the previous owner did make a post for us. We've been too busy to create anything of our own. I'm sure we'll have questions!

Yeah, it's been interesting seeing the different layouts of these boats. The 'sibling' boat had twin bunk staterooms and the washer/dryer in a different spot.

I didn’t know Jim and Sandy sold the boat. It’s a good boat.
David, now that you know the boat I'm guessing your post (quoted below) in the thread New Member and in the market (PNW)! is moot?

A 1979 OA 55 for $500,000. That sounds pretty steep to me. Maybe it was in like new condition?

For anyone still questioning the asking/sales prices I'd note that a sister ship, "Journey" was sold a few months ago and had an asking price of $575k. There has also been a third Mark 1 sold at over $500k.... Now, the older ones without refits are still $200k plus, but you cannot do the refits for the difference. Don't ask me how I know this......

And then of course there is Blue Eyes II. Ocean Alexander 50 Mk 1 Pilothouse Trawler: Power Boats | Boats Online for Sale | Fibreglass/grp | New South Wales (NSW) - Sydney NSW
Triple nickels, no 5'extension but in nice condition it seems. And in 1E Survey for commercial use.

The boat is a good boat. The asking price of $500,000 seems steep. When I made that comment I was thinking about average boats and not one that was Bristol. There are so few that meet the description of Bristol that I really can’t say if it was a deal or overpriced. I also only know what the boat looked like a few years ago and I am assuming it has not changed.
