We recently purchased a home on the St. John’s River south of Jacksonville in Green Cove Springs, Florida. We have a 2022 Ranger Tug R27OB and planned on taking her down in November. Our current carrier in Missouri, Progressive, will not insure her there. Our local agent there in Florida has been having issues finding a carrier and I was hoping that someone might have a suggestion for us? I appreciate it very much. Thank you,
Danny

I live in SW Florida and have Progressive. I use Global Marine Insurance as my broker. You might try them. They are out of Traverse City MI

Welcome aboard. I use Peter Ricks at Novamar. He is great.

I keep hearing that but I couldn't get him to return my call. Gave up after several tries.

I went with Chubb, agent was Jon Horton with Jack Martin & Associates 443.433.5744

Welcome aboard the TF, Danny, and welcome to Florida. When you bought your home at GCS, where did you get your homeowner's insurance? That agent may be able to help with boat insurance too, or point you in a good direction. As an example, my State Farm agent was able to give me a very competitive quote for a 32' inboard diesel here in Jacksonville.

Sorry to hear that. I had a similar experience with poor response from Ricks' office a year ago. Like you, I noted the experience as follow-up to posts recommending him. I eventually received a nice note a couple months later.

I will need to renew insurance eventually and I'll look for recommendations. I wish some other names would pop up on TF. I'm sure he's very good to his existing customers but I haven't felt the love as a potential new customer

I have never had any problems getting in touch with Peter. When Geico went crazy I called Peter and within 20 minutes he had gone through my options and helped me pick the best insurance for me.

When you are insuring whith a home/auto insurance company make sure you are getting quality marine insurance. Check what you are actually buying don’t just take the agents word that you are. Lots of times they are selling actual value instead of stated value insurance.

Your endorsement carries a lot of weight which is why I called. I called 4 times over the course of a couple weeks including leaving messages for his admin (Lauren? I might be wrong) who was referenced on his voicemail. He eventually responded to the TF thread and fell on his sword for not responding. If I remember correctly, sounded like he'd assumed additional management responsibilities. It was a heartfelt message but still.....not a good sign at the front end of a sales cycle.

Me too. Funny thing is, early on in my research phase, I reached out to him asking about what I could be able to insure. He was quite helpful, friendly, picked up on first ring and spent 30 minutes on the phone with me. Then, when it came time to seal the deal, he ghosted me. Perplexing. I hope he's ok. Maybe something happened? Or maybe I said something he didn't like when we talked? No idea.

For those that noted your frustration with me, I sincerely appreciate the feedback and apologize for my lack of followup. I have been extremely busy caring for my parents (90 dad and 87 mom) over the past 18 months that have a large number of health challenges including dementia and hip/knee replacements. I've spent more time at hospitals and care facilities than at the office.

It doesn't excuse my poor performance, and I am truly sorry.

My dad is in assisted living and has dementia, diabetes and prostate cancer. I can relate. Do what you have to do. We'll still be here when you are ready to get back to things. Family is more important. Thanks for letting us know.

We have State Farm for our Florida boat that is in the water in New Smyrna Beach all year. Had Geico (BOATUS) for 40 years and went shopping after Geico would no longer write Bahamas rider due to boat age. The State Farm policy is actually quite good including most all Bahamas including Abacos and Exumas.

I have a 28' trailer trawler. I live in Melrose about 30 miles south west of you. I use Progressive, liability only. No broker/agent involved. Call their 800 number and deal with the company directly. Cut out the middle man.

I owned a trailerable boat C26 Cutwater. I was insured with Chubb with no restrictions for being below 31 degree North during hurricane season because it was trailerable. When I sold the Cutwater and purchased a 34 pilot Mainship. Chubb changed the rules. Must be north of 31 degrees July 1 to November 1. I asked the broker why. He said trailerable boats are considered less vulnerable to damage because they can be moved out of Harms way. I also had the trailer insured with them so they knew it had a trailer. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. If you have a home in Missouri I would issue there for cheaper rate. I had my boat insured in Wisconsin as a homeport but could use the boat in Florida. It was insured for any waters in the Continental waters of the USA and Canada as far north as Brunswick. The insurance policy included Bahamas. No restrictions with time for the Cutwater. July1 to November1 with the Mainship. Insurance Broker, Gallagher insurance , Chubb

I spoke with Peter a couple of months ago and went through all my needs. Never heard back. 2-years ago the same thing happened. I've given up on Peter Ricks and Novamar. I sincerely wish I had a different experience.

Similar experience here. I wonder if the issue is the agent (Peter Ricks) or the agency (Novamar).

I don't understand the insurance business, but seems that once you've been "claimed" by an agent, you're off limits to other agents. So making multiple calls can hit unknown dead ends making it even tougher to navigate.

I wish the folks responding to threads like this would be more clear on the size of their boat. GEICO, Allstate, and Progressive seem perfectly happy to insure smaller boats. Larger ones or older ones, not so much.

Peter

Just as an FYI, our boat is power, 65 feet, liveaboard, full time in Stuart FL. Boat US/Geico insured us.

As previously mentioned, check with Alicia Pulcano, Jack Martin in Annapolis. We are in Vero from Nov-Jan then Exumas Feb-May. 1999 Eagle 40 with no issues. 15Jun-01Nov must be North of Elizabeth City.

Same. Suspecting that Mr. Ricks was uninterested because I am on the opposite side of the country, I contacted Novamar's Florida office, and believe it or not, had the same experience. I had to work hard over a period of days to just get a quote. It came with a polite apology that they had been unresponsive. In the end, my State Farm agent beat Novamar by a lot, and on top of that, turned my inquiry around the same day.

While no agent would ever come right out and say it to a stranger, it's true that in the insurance industry there are brokerages that simply have as much business as they can handle. Maybe that's Novamar - it's the only explanation that makes any sense. The only reason I kept trying was b/c they are recommended so strongly by our fellow TF member, who seems like a straight shooter. I finally got the message, though. No hard feelings - lesson learned.

I insured through Progressive online in 2021 (and renew every year) for a 1977 34' Marine Trader. Agreed Value comprehensive policy, no surveys requested yet.

We just purchased an OA 48E and are Florida residents. We obtained insurance thru a broker - NBOA, who found us a good policy thru AIG.

My understanding is that Geico only insures for what they determine is the value of you boat when and if you make a claim, not what you may have for a loan value or is the market value.
