Exploring the Sea of Cortez in our 4788 Bayliner

Today we are about 200NM up into the Sea of Cortez in our Bayliner 4788.

The anchorage is called Puerto Los Gatos and it is about as pretty it can get.

There are a a mix of boats in the anchorage, some sail boats, a Nordhavn 40 and us.

The water is perfect for swimming and snorkeling in the mid 70's. The days are warm, near 90 and the nights are cool in the 60's.

What a perfect place!

Tonight we are having friends overfor dinner, and tomorrow we will try to catch a fish or two with my speargun. Maybe we'll find a Conch, or some clams, or even a crab or two.
I'm sure we won't go hungry.

That's cool Kevin! We regretted that the North winds preventing us from exploring up the SOC while we were there. Now that we've made it to our new dock (house) in Florida, we'll probably not get to the SOC again, at least not in our own boat. Hope Vicki is keeping you in line. Give her a hug for us!

The Eiffel church in Santa Rosalia is still on my bucket list. A prefab stamped-steel structure designed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel to be sent to Africa, it was first assembled in Paris (winning an award) and then reassembled in Brussels, where it was purchased by a mining company and sent to Mexico and reassembled again in 1897. There is some recent controversy that it may have been another architect's work. Still interesting.

I've been int it, a really cool piece of work.

On this trip we won't make it that far north. We have to get back to La Paz because we head out on a several week adventure in Europe where we rented a car and are going a zero pre-plan road trip.

We cruised the coast of Mexico for 8 years in our Hatteras 48 LRC did the Sea of Cortes twice for 2 months each time. Los Gatos was one of our favorite anchorage’s. Last time we were there was 12 years ago so I don’t remember the guy’s name but we always had a dude come by and offer to get lobster for us.

Just FYI, from the Mexican Fishing regulations:

“A fishing license allows to capture fin fish only. It does not allow to capture any crustaceans or mollusks, with the exception of squid, and their capture by anyone is strictly prohibited. Totuaba, turtles and marine mammals are under protection of the Ministry and may not be captured at any time.”

Enjoy your stay up there, I’ll be in La Paz in June, I foolishly volunteered to help our friends on Dos Rojos bring their boat back to Portland then.

Happy to report that Freedom is still out cruising. After a quick trip from San Diego To Ensenada for bottom paint I am headed North to SF Bay and Delta. Perhaps PNW and Inside Passage in either 2025 or 2026. She is a fine boat.
