My son is in North Carolina, and it looks like he might need to re-charge two of his Cruise Air AC units.

What off the shelf gas have folks used in these units?
Is there a compatible gas that does not need a certified HVAC person to purchase?

Thanks!

I have purchased gas online. The issue is the year that the unit was manufactured and which type of gas is in there right now. As you know, it all depends on which version of gas was used in the AC to begin with. If it is an outdated non-eco friendly freon, then he may need to evacuate the system and replace with a gas that is compatible for that specific unit. Unfortunately, if the gas is low, then there is probably a leak somewhere that needs to be corrected first.

Depends on how old they are. Some old units had r-12 or r-22. Mid 90’s and later likely had 134a.
134a is available in most states and is pretty user friendly.
The refrigerant type should be marked on the compressor somewhere.
