Hi All
Would anyone have any information or know anything about Defever 40 aft cabin flybridge by Sea Stella. I am thinking of purchasing one but can’t seem to find any information about them which raises red flags. Help would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard. A friend of mine had a 40’ Defever that was built in Costa Mesa, CA I believe. Don’t know anything about Sea Stella though l

It was a full displacement hull so it was good at sea. But at the dock it would roll around a bit. It had a single Perkins engine in it. They used to run offshore in California quite a bit.

You don't say what year, but I'm assuming it is fiberglass and not wood. Arthur DeFever designed boats but did not build them, although he did contract to build a few production lines in the early years. Sometimes "built by" names attached to boats are actually the broker or importer who branded the boat. I have DeFever's build records from 1940 until 2005. There are no boats listed as being built by Sea Stella. In the late 1970s and early '80s, there were nearly 1400 aft-cabin trawlers in the 38ft-40ft range (38s are often called 40s, despite DeFever's design length designation). Official DeFever designs in this range were built at various boatyards in China, Mexico and the US including but not limited to Jensen, CTF Marine, Miracle Boat, YuChing Taiwan, and Universal Boat Company (successor to Oriental Boat Company that built most of the early wooden DeFevers). It was a heyday for recreational trawlers so there were also many boatyards building and importing unlicensed DeFever copies, a testament to their unmatched perfection.

Hi Seastar DF50
It is a 2008 model it is advertised on YachtHub.com Sea Stella 40 Aftcabin De Fever Design 2008 Flybridge Cruiser. I have had a a look over it there was a lot of leaking windows with varying degrees of damage. The genset was installed where a small rat would have trouble servicing it. Generally not well maintained. I had a look at a Defever 36 Heritage East 2005 which was in much better condition no leaks around the windows, advertised on yachthub to. You wouldn’t know how they handle in a sea as I have only had sailing yachts.
