Sometimes, when we arrive into new anchorages in Alaska, we are not confident or satisfied with the bottom mapping we see in our navigation software and the other charts that we have available to us. Whether we are concerned by recent shoaling or possible uncharted rocks, we want to create our own depth chart before we move in to a certain area and settle the boat.
We have been trying to do this with the fish finder on our dinghy which has perfectly adequate capability for bottom mapping with bathymetric data. However, there are two problems with this approach: first, we have determined that we cannot easily transfer the bathymetric data from our fish finder to our big boat’s navigation system and second, launching the dinghy can be a PIA.
Do any of you have any recommendations as to a fish finder that will provide a good depth map that can be easily transferred to TimeZero, either wirelessly (best) or through an SD card? (We have Starlink onboard.)
I just came across a product called Deeper Sonar that looks super interesting. It is a small tennis sized ball that apparently bottom maps and then uploads the created maps to an app automatically. What is especially interesting about this product to me is that it can be easily used from our dinghy, kayak, or SUP interchanably. Being able to create the bottom map without deploying the dinghy sounds great.
Does anyone have any experience using the Deeper Sonar products?
Thanks-
Steve
