Can you identify this riser ?

Hi All

I*delivered my new (to me) Californian 34 home this past weekend (across Rosario Strait in 30 plus knots but that is another story).*One of the things it needs is a new exhaust riser on the port engine. Perkins 4.236 from 1981.

TAD has something similar but it is*larger which would cause the elbow in the exhaust off the riser to be a low point by about 2 inches. I assume you don't want water collecting there so I would like to replace the riser with the identical unit if possible.

I am hoping one of you can point me to the supplier. I am also hoping my photo comes through in this post.

I just had Philbrooks (talk to Brett) install two new risers (aka exhaust elbows/shower heads)*on my Perkins Sabres. Special SS*fabrication - not cheap but no identical part was available in NA. An anti siphon setup may be*necessary too so* you don't ingest water back into engine. Philbrooks can help you on this too. If you do the labor, you can save a few bucks.

So did you have the same riser as in the pic I posted? The may be an OEM Perkins part but I thought perhaps they might be aftermarket and still available.

You said Philbrooks stainless customs units "weren't cheap", would you be willing to say how much?

We have a 1985 6.3544m Perkins, when it came time for a new one we could not get a factory one so we had Strait Metal in Sidney build one out of stainless.They did a great job.

No insult intended, but a used riser has a life of days to but a few years. Riser life is a combination of marine age and hours used. As mentioned in another thread last week figure about 4 (high hours)*to 8 (low hours) years to be safe.

Mappy, I think you're looking at two parts there. I replaced them on my 34 Calif a couple years ago.

There's a flange which is about 4 inches square with 4 holes at the corners and a male nipple welded to it. The other portion is the elbow like shown in Island Cessna's post. The image shows a female thread connection and a male nipple threaded in place.

Check out TAD Reference # 4-236-03 for the elbow. I'm almost positive that's what I ordered for my 4.236 and it worked great.

I had the flanges manufactured locally by a welder from black steel nipple and flat stock. I think someone was selling them online for $300-350 each. I had them made for a fraction of that. It's not necessary to make them out of stainless. The rest of the exhaust system is black steel, too. The originals lasted me 32 years...I expect the replacements to do the same.
