I see sales tax rates range between 8 - 4% in New York State when registering a boat. As an out of state boater birthing a boat in the St Lawrence am I required to register the boat in one of those county’s with a tax rate of 8% or am I free to register in in the Albany area upon the Hudson we’re tax rates are only 4%? ontarios HST is 13% on the Ca dollar……

Is this for a boat you already own but will be moving to NY? If so, you shouldn't have to pay sales tax to register it in NY. If it's a new purchase then I'm not sure there's a way out.

Some states have a personal property tax and it can vary between counties. Mi would check with the NY tax authorities to make sure.

No personal property tax on boats in NY, and the DMV fees are fairly cheap as well (IIRC my last registration renewal for the boat was $75 for 3 years). The up front sales tax is really the only big gotcha.

The boat 1989 Monk 36 is owned currently by a Canadian who recently completed the great loop. I am concerned about bringing it into US due to tariffs on boats made in Asia. I have no trade in and anticipate a cash sale. Looking to make the most prudent registration choice.

You should also look into CDN tax that may/ may not be due on the sale.
Here is a thread that may be useful. .. Buying boat in ON, CA and importing into US, CA taxes?

I dont know what current NY tax situation is for boat sales but it used to be your choice to register where you reside or where the boat is stored / used. You might be ahead securing a slip in Albany to qualify for registration there? Need to check DMV for current regs

Check the tariff information carefully. You may not be responsible for tariffs on any parts of the boat that were originally manufactured in the United States. This could include engines, electronics, etc..

You may want to check the sales tax issue; I live south of Albany, but the sales tax in Albany County is 8%, which is true pretty much everywhere in the state, until you get closer to NYC where local taxes are even higher.
The state, however, has a limit of tax on the first $230,000 of the selling price. Anything over that is free of tax. Still a bunch of money.
Check the tariff rules carefully as well; usually they don't assess a tariff for used boats or cars as long as it is for your personal use, but things seem to be changing to better to be sure.
