I put vinegar in my water tank when leaving the boat for 5 days or more. Works like a gem. My question. Would this be a reason for seeing black restrictive grit on the filter screen? Usually will take 3 to 4 weeks to be noticed. I use 3 filters, 1 being carbon, from the dock. My thought is this can be remnants of dead bacteria.

Vinegar contains acetic acid. Which probably attacks the carbon, but it may also be attacking metals in the system. While it won't bother stainless steel, ferrous metals and aluminum will be effected by it. The water pump and possibly a filter housing may be effected. Don't know if your water tanks are plastic or aluminum.

Grit is unlikely to be dead bacteria.

I agree with OC Diver. The grit likely is from an aluminum tank being eaten
Of course how much vinegar do you put in. Maybe too much.
And what are your tanks made of?

I don’t think I would put vinegar in the tank all the time. Why do you feel the need to do that? Maybe read Peggie Halls book. She covers water tank cleaning I believe.
