Best substitute for Navionics route planning tool Garmin discontinued?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

For the price of an IPad Pro, you can just buy a inexpensive Windows laptop with 15.6” screen, a copy of Coastal Explorer and a NEMO for interfacing the NMEA 2000 and 0183 network to the laptop. I have an IPad Mini I use for its portability. I don’t view an IPad Pro as any more portable than my laptop. With the NEMO I get NMEA 2000 data to the IPad Mini.

Navionics used to be available on laptop or PC windows. My guess is there is not enough demand for PC/laptop either Mac or windows, that is why it was dropped.
I just found Phone Link. Now I can control my Android from the laptop. I have Navionics open on phone screen, thus it is displayed on laptop. can use mouse and keyboard. It is full width but only 7/8 height. BUT, bigger than phone so usable.

My electronics are Simrad so I obviously have the app. The app will do a an auto-route just as the Garmin online application would do.

I just purchased the "lifetime" Argo app based on the conversation I had with Jeff about NOAA chart detail coming by April (I'm BC coast). Tired of the Navionics/Garmin games. He's very on top of this, and seems to be listening to what we want in a Navigation platform. Fingers crossed that it is all that by the time my May cruising season begins.

I’ve done this for years, and just got the latest iPad Pro 13 last year just before heading up north. It’s great, although stoopid expensive. Also, I got the “matte” screen. You do give up a little bit of,the stunning colour and clarity, but the antiglare properties make it well worth while up on the bridge.

Edit: this was supposed to be in reply to post #30. Sorry if it looked confusing.

I wrote to Sailproof yesterday; here's their reply in full:

Thank you for your message and interest.

Yes, you can indeed use Navionics on Android. In fact, most navigation apps are available for Android as well. Regarding Navionics specifically, you can use the same login across Android and iOS devices. However, please note that since this year, Navionics allows only two devices per account for simultaneous use (please confirm if this applies in your case). This setup lets you use our rugged, waterproof tablet outdoors, exposed to the elements and sunlight, while keeping your iPad or iPhone as a backup or for occasional use indoors. We don't offer any tablets on iOS as it is exclusively available for apple products.

If you have any further questions, we’re always happy to assist.

Now I am thinking about either a Panasonic Toughbook or a Sailproof tablet (and an Armor-X case for the current iPad is on its way). I had no idea that the one Navionics subscription could be run on both an Android and an iOS device at the same time. I use a charging block at the bridge currently, so the iPad can stay on while I am using.

I have a SailProof. I use several apps on it. It is a well built, rugged tablet. Mine is android, but they also make a Windows version.

FYI..I purchased a mouse and keyboard for the Tablet. It really does make using Navionics much better. I just need to configure the scroll wheel on the mouse to zoom in or out.
Okay Sands, I’ve got my new Bluetooth mouse paired and working on my iPad. How do you configure the scroll wheel on the mouse to zoom in or out on Navionics?

It's probably an operating system setting you need to look for. The scroll wheel on a mouse just works out of the box for any app on Windows and Android. Or maybe some tweak for the mouse.

I have zoom with scroll wheel enabled in Settings/Accessibility/Zoom, but Navionics does not zoom the chart with the mouse scroll wheel no matter what combination of buttons (including no button) are held down. I don't see a scroll wheel zoom setting in Navionics.

Whoa, after owning Macs since 1986 and iOS products since the original iPad, I had not considered adding a mouse to the iPad or even that it could be done. Very cool. I can see how that would tip the balance in favor of Navionics. Thanks, Portage!
Before adding a mouse, you might consider the iPad with an Apple case/cover thing that includes a track-pad and full keyboard. That's what I use on the road, as my lap top is a real LEAD MINE large screen device. I've found that using the iPad as a computer works just fine and there are far fewer "difference" between the computer version and the phone version.

I have one. Apple calls it the Magic Keyboard and it does almost make the iPad into a laptop, but there is still a big difference between the ease of use with MacOS on my MacBook Pro and iOS on my iPad Air. While iOS is impressive and I have used on devices since the iPhone 4 and the first iPad Mini, it remains a mobile-centric operating system and to that end sacrifices some detail for ease of use. The relative imprecision of a finger masks that and allows a lot to be done with a finger, but it is exposed by the mouse and trackpad to a lesser degree when used for tasks like route planning in navigation software. I gave up on the mouse in favor of the track pad back in the Windows 98 era, but you can't beat a mouse for accurate work and route planning is where I most appreciate the accuracy.
