Hey ya'll. We're a younger couple who have our sights set on getting a cruiser or trawler in 3 or so years and doing the Loop shortly after getting acquainted with the boat and getting it ready for the trip. So right now we're in full fact-finding mode and figuring out the best steps forward to achieve our goal.

I grew up around lake boats owned by friends and extended family in Michigan. Today my wife and I rent runabouts whenever we can. So we've never owned a boat ourselves but aren't complete greenhorns on the water either. I'm very aware of how far we have to go experience-wise for our big trip though.

I've been reading about the Loop and cruising in general and joined TF to tap into the brain trust here. I'll be asking for all kinds of advice (hello getting insurance on an older trawler with no previous boat ownership).

I'll keep all my noob questions for other threads but it's great to be here.

Edit to add:
Currently, after having stepped onto exactly zero trawlers, I'm thinking we want an older (80s-90s) 36-40' trawler with a single diesel. The biggest limiting factor for me will be my height of 6'6". I'm pretty sure I'll want a boat I can stand up straight in with a little extra room to spare and also be able to lay flat in the stateroom at night. We're planning on Trawlerfest and the Loop Rendezvous next year to set foot on boats. We may shamelessly skulk around local marinas in hopes of finding a friendly owner will to chat as well.

Welcome to the forum!

Lots of good information in the archives about looping boats, older boats, and insuring them.

Also a good idea to join and read on the AGLCA, which is the Loopers association and forum.

Welcome aboard. Insurance may be tough but send a PM to Pau Hana here on the forum. He is a great insurance broker and can probably give you good advice on how to proceed.
