Like i dont have enough to do on Phelps - at 79 i was thinking an anchor windlass might be nice. 2 vertical shaft units on Mplace around 700. Lewmar and Simpson lawrence. Any input appreciated. 30 ft Khoudung just like Barking Sands. Checking specs now, both look the same to me ....

Moot point - bought Lewmar V700 for Phelps (30 ft).
Comments good or bad requested before i try to mount the thing, tks!

So has anyone used a wireless (or wired ) remote on an anchor windlass ?

Installed the ProFish, quite similar 2018 in my Cape Cod 30 sailboat.
Do not use it much as at 83 use marinas more than anchoring but appreciate having the choice.
They are nice units,I am sure you match the gypsy with the chain size you have.
Installing was quite straight, make sure you use a bedding material of your choice, NO 5200!!!!!!
was away from the boat for 30 minutes and the idiot installing it applied the 5200 proudly, wanted to push the bast.... overboard!!!

not sure you have a choice,if the chain port is in place or no, in my boat have to use the hole already available, do not like it because the chain tends to pile up and have to push it when finishing the haul.

This year have trouble lifting the anchor, the gypsy will free wheel, found I neglected maintenance, need to take apart the wheel and clean up/lubricate all moving parts, replaced the tension controlling kit, all is well.

Do not use a wireless, looks like a nice option if you're single or shorthand.

I installed the two-foot control on the bow and a remote wired inside the cockpit so have control both stations.

The power is drawn from a dedicated battery housed in the vberth with its own fuses etc.

is part of a two batteries bank, the other battery is dedicated to start the engine, isolated from house battery.
When starting the engine or running the windlass, both batteries are switched on while the engine is running.

Have 4 solar panels, installed in 3 controllers.

One single panel and its controller is dedicated to the engine/windlass bank, the thinking is starting the engine and anchoring are vital.

I use all chain.

If doing it again, more likely will use a combination nylon/chain.

good luck

TKS!!
Wont have a battery forward, but boat has gigunda fine strand cables run there already. Windlass has maybe #6 off the motor. Will watch performance and check voltage drop as it is now.
Looks like ill have to cut a second hole for chain fall with this windlass. Secure current on-deck hawse hole.

if it's never had a windlass, make sure to think about reinforcing the deck.

On our previous boat, we installed a Lewmar Pro-Fish 700 Horizontal Windlass and a
Lewmar Handheld Wired Remote. I intentionally speced a wired remote for several reasons: far less expensive than wireless and less to go wrong, wouldn't fall overboard, didn't want to install foot controls in deck. The wireless unit tucked away nicely on the bulkhead in the anchor locker. Loved this entire setup -- never a moment of trouble.

Our existing boat came with a wireless remote, and it's a little finicky as to orientation and responsiveness. I've occasionally had to walk to the side deck alongside the bridge to reach up to the wired switch on the helm. If this unit gives up the ghost, I'll happily install a wired unit.

On several of my previous boat I used a "good automatic windlass"

The have several models.
I really liked the free drop model, rope/ chain version. You can deploy and retrieve from the helm. No need for a " safety" latch on the bow as per the manufacture. Really simplifies the anchoring process.
They do installs, and are really nice people to deal with. Nice local manufacture in NJ . 100% usa

If anyone wants a Good, i was at a place that has several for sale. Did not want one because i have a Samson post already. Tks for the reminder on reinforcement. It'll be on a 2" thick pulpit tied into the post, but ill plate it inside too.
Found a Lewmar pro fish 550 at this place yesterday sold as parts only. Think it just needs a cleanup & a motor. Considering using it instead of the V700 due to space in chain locker. In Chesapeake bay, i doubt ill need the extra 150lbs of lift. What say you all ?

Looking for chain (1/4) and not finding continuous length. Is there any accepted safe way to join lengths & still pass thru the gypsy ?
BTW, i went with the V700

There are 2 part joiners you rivet together to join chain. Riveted, they resemble a link which should pass through but you never know. I think some people weld the rivets for certainty.

Be careful with chain connector links. I purchased one, and ended up not using it because it had a considerably lower strength rating than the chain.
