For west coast folks with an appetite for a project, the U.S. Navy is disposing by online auction of a 65' "support vessel." Built of aluminum in 1991 by Oregon Iron Works, with twin Detroit 8-71TIs, and located in Bremerton, WA. With nine days to go, bidding presently stands at $2500.00. Other than the fact that I am a U.S. taxpayer, I have no ownership interest or any other stake in this boat. I'm just thankful that I live on the east coast and thus able to resist temptation.

Here's the link to the GSAAuctions preview website, with a few photos: https://www.gsaauctions.gov/auctions/preview/307209

It ain't exactly in Bristol condition. Here is an excerpt from the vessel profile, downloadable from the GSA site:

BUILDER: OREGON IRON WORKS
YEAR: 1991
HULL MATERIAL: ALUMINUM
*****ALL WEIGHTS AND MEASUREMENTS PROVIDED ARE APPROXIMATE AND MAY
VARY*****
OVERALL LENGTH (APPROX): 65’
MAX BEAM (APPROX): Unknown
PROPULSION: TWIN DETROIT DIESEL 87-71T1 INBOARD ENGINES, reported to
be partially operational however this is not a guarantee that it is.
FEATURES: Pilot house; large aft work deck with cnopy; swim platform
with ladder; safety rails; galley; head; GPS/chart plotter.
DISCREPANCIES (INCLUDE BUT MAY NOT BE LIMITED TO): The turbo on the
starboard engine gets excessively hot, to the extent that the
insulation will begin to smoke. The port generator has excessive
exhaust and produces a sheen on the water. There is an exhaust leak
on the starboard generator. Boat is taking on a small amount of
water into the galley; it is likely there is a small leak in the
hull. Port fuel tank is leaking into the galley bilge. Boat has
been modified throughout its service life with no configuration
management. Electrical system has been heavily modified with no
engineering design or review. Radar and depth sounder reported to be
non-op. Hydraulic pump unit and HVAC are non-op. Engine room and
lazarette bilge pumps are not functional; unable to test other bilge
pumps as it would result in a fuel/oil spill. Fire suppression
system has been removed.
REMOVAL: Boat is in the water and must be removed by waterway.
PLEASE PLAN REMOVAL ACCORDINGLY.

I am West coast based but not tempted. Perhaps could be converted for private use but likely a big budget. Perhaps impossible to insure so unlikely you could get a slip. Bidding is up to $5.9k, reserve not met.

Interesting to see the outcome so thanks for sharing.

$85,000 on 12/16. Agree that it would be a hole in the water, but for the right person who knows?

The Navy did pretty good finding someone to come get it, probably having had to drag it off and pay $85K. Must have been someone with a shipyard in the region.

When I clicked the link, it said "no image available."

Who would ever heard of selling a boat without at least ONE picture?

Once the bidding closes, which happened on December 11th, I believe the GSA auction site takes down the images. I must say it looked good to me, at least from the safe distance of 2500 miles or so!

MODERATORS:
The vessel is no longer available.
Should the thread be removed?

Looks like the bidding continues.

Of interest, a few years ago a friend contacted me, he had bought an ex Navy freightship (sistership to the vessel in the movie 'Mr. Roberts'). Of note, he bought her from the person who bought her at auction, sold the fuel off her then listed her for sale for at a good profit.
She was about 184' needed a bit of work and was laying in Astoria Oregon. We did some work on her there, then I sailed her down to La Paz Mexico, where we spent about a year outfitting her.
We then we sailed to Tahiti, then Tonga, and on to Fiji. Where she had a refit. I left her there but she later sailed to Vanuatu where he sold her and she is now a museum.

My mistake... just realized it is the 16th... must be getting old.

That is a great story!

You have to login to see the pictures.

The boat linked is $85k now. All engines are Detroits, so reliable after you fix the problems. It's going to be a fuel hog.

After 30 years in the military, my usual response to questions about surplus equipment is "I've seen what the ones we keep are like, I'd hate to think of the ones we throw away".

Sorta like “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Caution about the word “trash”
