I've been looking online where Harbor Marine has a presence, but they mostly want to sell you a brand new engine. It used to be not so difficult to find engines, but that no longer seems to be the case. Am I wrong?

Cummins used to sell rebuilt engines and they had a new engine warranty. Don’t know if they still do or not. Call Sbmar.com and ask them.

I think part of the problem is that parts and labor costs, to have and engine rebuilt, have gone up so much that it's not practical. Not to mention the lack of skilled labor to do it.

Go to Boats & Harbors. They have picture ads, classified ads for all types of new, used and marine equipment both commercials and recreational. You can search by category. Here is site for engines.

Are we talking about a gas or diesel engine here? To my knowledge, Jasper does not offer marine diesel engines, but please correct me if I'm wrong. If it's gas, I'd recommend getting a new long block. A few years back I bought a new one from Doug Russell Marine for my Shamrock, it was very reasonable.

Iwarden, the only time I've ever used a gasoline engine in a boat, was a ski boat and dingy. All of my sailboats and my trawler (when I find her) have been/will be diesel.

What I find interesting so far in this search is that while commercial marine engines seem fairly easy to find rebuilt, the smaller pleasure boat engines, 65-200 HP, are almost impossible to find so far. I'm not sure why that is, but it certainly seems to be the case.
