Unfortunately, due to the realities of aging and health issues that have developed since I ordered the boat, my long distance cruising days are now behind me. Reluctantly my new 2024 Helmsman 38 Sedan (the first one of this model) is for sale. This is the April calendar boat in the calendar created by Jill (Tom-Jill-Lilly).

This is the Sedan, distinguished from the 38E Pilothouse in having wide, covered, protected full walk-around side decks. The decks are protected by deep bulwarks and make access to any part of the boat safe and easy in all conditions. Placing fenders, docking, fending off, going through locks, are a breeze with every inch of the boat easily and safely accessible.

The Sedan also has a large, spacious, protected cockpit, fully covered by the hardtop, with plenty of room for several chairs and a table.

The forward stateroom, being a single cabin model, is very spacious. Plenty of walk-around space.

Separate head and shower compartments. The shower is particularly spacious, plenty of room for two people (if you're into that).

The flybridge/upper deck is massive, all one flat, continuous level. Plenty of space for up to a 13 ft dinghy and lots of seating. The flybridge even had protected side decks around it.

The engine room/machinery space is cavernous. Everything is easily accessible.

Thanks Richard. The one thing no one can run away from is aging and health issues.

Yes, both settees are 6'6" long and long enough to sleep on. The port (L-shaped) settee is convertible into a double berth. The table lowers, and there are cushions to go on top of it to make a double berth.

The starboard settee is not convertible, but one person could sleep on it.

Hundreds of hours of time and tens of thousands of dollars have been invested in debugging and enhancing the boat since I took delivery. The only thing missing has been my ability to use it .

Given the only way to the flybridge is through the hatch, what beam of tender can be carried without obstructing. And the David can pivot to that? What were you planning to use?

The hatch to the flybridge is at the far starboard side of the upper deck. I once measured the unobstructed and open size of the upper deck (aft of the flybridge seating) to clear the hatchway, don't remember what it was but I recall the open space net of the hatchway was about 8 ft x 15 ft?

The davit is electric, telescopes for length and rotates 360 deg. I suppose the footprint to comfortably fit a dinghy is probably about 7 ft x 14 ft? I was planning to use a Whaly 370 and remember measuring at the time showed it would comfortably fit.

I think at least one recent Helmsman owner spec'd lithium and solar and opted not to have a generator. For my own personal preferences, I don't think lithium battery technology is quite sufficiently reliable and robust for marine applications to rely on as a sole electric power source in the absence of a generator. Your mileage may vary.

As readers try to parse the various pros and cons of the sedan model vs pilot house model, this discussion about dingy size highlights a difference that may escape attention. On the sedan the flybridge seating and controls are set materially farther forward than on the pilot house. Therefore a dingy can be (must be) set running fore and aft on the port side. But allows for a longer model.

That can be of benefit to some. It would raise weight distribution questions.

For those that want a customization that includes a grill or fridge up top, the extra room might also be welcomed.

There are obviously other differences since simplistically this is a stretched 37 sedan. Shoppers would need to spend time aboard both to grasp them. Helmsman will have Nicks sedan and Greg’s pilothouse side by side at Trawlerfest Baltimore next month. There will be no better time to compare.

For those that value side decks above the interior space a pilothouse model brings, I can’t think of a better boat currently produced in this size range. It basically has a market all its own.

The 38e has evolved from refinement and customer ideas and customization. It will be interesting to see how this model evolves over time as well.

I can see the weight distribution but also think that occurs too with the motor when the tender goes across the beam too, given the weight of the motor.

I think Nick’s boat looks spectacular. What a great set up for the Loop too. And all those locks.
