1976 Chrysler 10 HP Outboard - Parts Availability

The wife and I are full-time liveaboard cruisers, and we need a dinghy motor. We have a West Marine RIB 350, so it needs to be 15 HP or less.

I want something older and easy to turn a wrench on - nothing fancy - 80s/90s Johnson, Evinrude...etc.

I found a 1976 Chrysler 10 HP that runs well and looks well taken care of - but I'm worried about parts availability. I know that Chrysler eventually sold off their outboard division and it became Force, but beyond that, I don't know much about them.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

I wouldn’t. Look for a carb rebuild kit for it. Or an impeller.

Yeah, I figured. I did some searching yesterday, and pretty much everything is on one of those two places or on eBay and the pickings are sparse even then.

I think I'm going to pass on it.

Finding parts for 1976 of any manufacturer will be a challenge. 49 yrs is a long time. For an out of the business manufacturer as other's have said a long and frustrating internet search. It could be an interesting project if you were at home on the dirt with a garage and a passion for old odd ball machinery.

Yeah, you'll be better off with a little Mercury or Johnrude. Not made anymore either but there tons of them still puttin' down the river and lots of parts too.

I had a 1970's Chrysler 9.9 HT outboard for awhile (came along with a boat). I wasn't really into doing my own service work back then, but two things I remember about it were that it was SO cramped under the compact cowling (you had to mash wires to even get the cowling on), and it was loud and obnoxious underway.

Amazing thrust though with a huge prop.

I wouldn't buy another one.
