Grand Banks 36 single or twin?

I was considering a 36' as well, its a very efficient hull that tops out at over 15kts on twin 210hp.I joined the Grand banks owners forum to get more info , and there is indeed a lot of very useful inside expertise on lots of diverse subjects. My conclusion: the teak decks are a deal stopper...

I think you are right about teak; lovely to look at when its new, but a nightmare to maintain when it gets old with all the wooden plugs that were used to hide the screws. Spell check actually made my typing error into a spoonerism.....:D

Hi Barry, I hit the big 6 zero this year , and have plans nearly identical to yours. At the moment I have a steel barge on a river mooring , but I want to move down to the Med now that I'm retired and I've been looking out for suitable trawlers on the various yacht sale sites . The big problem...

Hours/sq.m to lift old teak decks?

Good point. I suppose the GB range of boats were all covered in teak as its part of the trawler experience , but they were built to a very high spec. Like everything on a boat its best to treat each vessel on its individual merits, rather than tar everything with the one brush. I think great...

That is a beautiful job! First class. :)

Hours/sq.m to lift old teak decks?

I've got an idea of the cost from a post on another forum: €40-42k for 4O0sq.ft on a 36' sailing yacht, stripping the teak and making good the sub-deck not included. Of course that includes the new teak, which is why I was trying to get some idea of the cost of teak removal and replacing the...

Hours/sq.m to lift old teak decks?

It is only now that I'm realising that what you say about foam core is the most important thing to look for in an old boat; the wood insets in your core were wet and rotten too. AFAIK the whole deck core on a GB36 is ply: I think I've had a very lucky escape not buying into that massive nightmare!

Hours/sq.m to lift old teak decks?

By all accounts you took the right descision not replacing the treak and recreating the exact conditions that caused the original problem. It is really extraordinary that the original manufactures made such a dogs dinner laying the decks. As far as I can fathom the screws were used to hold the...

Hours/sq.m to lift old teak decks?

My biggest fear is that when the teak is removed the ply sub-deck will get very weak and floppy, which would mean I'd have to renew the rotten ply core : that could esculate the job into a major deck rebuild costing $$$ and taking months to complete. I hadn't realised that most of the ply core...

Hours/sq.m to lift old teak decks?

Hi All, Here in Europe you can buy 10-12mm teak decking at about £30 sq.ft, not cut to size of course. A company Laying the deck works out at about £100 sq.ft, but you have to lift the old teak and remove all the fittings and repair the under-deck plywood ready for the new teak. The sort of...

Pros and cons of single or twin engines for GB 36s?

Re. The GB36 specifically, owners report a solid continuous Max cruise of just over 16kts on twin 210hp Cummins ; impressive for a 12 tons trawler. Its a surprisingly efficient hull at 30hp/ton equaling the new Swift trawler34, as it actually planes without pushing a massive wall of water in...

    GB36: Which hull is best?

Thanks for the info; that explains a lot! So its either 120hp for 10kts max or twin 210hp for 15kts, that makes the choices a lot easier.Im aware of the teak deck problems, and indeed the mild steel fuel tanks which could cost a fortune to replace, and of course the rotten windows. Just to...

    GB36: Which hull is best?

Lots & lots of 32's both wood and GRP. Do you mean Marine Traders by nt......quite a few of those as well. I've always presumed the 32' was a displacement hull, as I've never heard of one with a big enough engine to get up on the plane? A 32' would be big enough, but I would like to have the...

    GB36: Which hull is best?

I would be very surprised if any JD engines made it over the pond, as there were no agents selling Deere farm machinery until much later in the 90's. The tradition in the UK is single engine up to 32', and twin over that length. Now that electric cars are starting to sell we should see the...

    GB36: Which hull is best?

That sounds interesting. I've only been watching yatchworld for a couple of months, but no single engines boats have come onto the market. Was the single engined boat a Lehman 120hp, or a bigger 180 or 210 turbo engine?

    GB36: Which hull is best?

The Europa style boats are totally gorgeous, but are way over my budget. I really like the overall look of the boat, but very few sedans are for sale over here and go for crazy prices. They seem to be bullet proof GRP hulls with all round good performance.

    GB36: Which hull is best?

I grew up on a farm and I've done lots of hours ploughing with the smaller 4 cylinder ford 80 & 100hp engines: beautifully smooth and IMO much nicer than the rattly old Perkins. :) my only resevation is the amount of smoke they produce on Start up; funnily enough we never noticed back in the...

    GB36: Which hull is best?

Hi All, I'm considering a GB36, and I've noticed that late 80's and 90" s boats are considerably more expensive than the earlier ones. I believe the old hull was widened and lengthened 1987; is this the reason for the price difference and does this affect the overall performance? Here in...

    Grand Banks 32 Sedan

I've been considering a Grand Banks too, and the 36 seems to be a better hull and can run for shelter at 12kts with twin 135 lehman or 16kts with the turbo 210hp Cummins or Ford's . it weighs 12tons versus 9.5 for the 32'. Is the 32' a semi-d displacement hull like the 36, and what speed can it...

87-year-old Boat Heads to UK (the slow way)

Sounds like an epic trip: Wow! I've been planning a move to the Med too, but Brexit has put a stop to Gibraltar as a base because the Spanish could close the border; its hard to decide where to go that's not too expensive and where the language isn't too difficult to Comprehend. I'll be...
