    What's coming for Ranger..?

This still sounds like a bogus rumor that Ranger was building anything bigger than 31. Winter Island could have either made a big typo, or they're pulling someone's leg. If RT was building a 41, surely it would show up on the official Ranger Tug website...:ermm:

The Great Loop- What would YOU ask the experts?

The OP's presentation might already be finalized being only 2 days out... but I'd suggest covering the topic of easing transfer back and forth between US and Canadian waters. There's some interesting options these days like acquiring a NEXUS membership and using the ROAM app by Customs & Border...

    Headset Recommendations

Its personal preference but the Eartecs were a bit too bulky for our taste and we also didn't want to spend a fortune on other options. For a while we did try basic bluetooth headsets to smartphone where we simply called each other during docking. This works okay as long as you have cellular...

    Suggestions Auto Pilot

as hjorgan points out; common interface can be an important feature. for example our GPSs, AP, and chart plotters are all Garmin and we too have all the features of following tracks, zig zag etc., we love it. The other thing if you have common equipment (at least in our case) is that when you do...

    New member -- Pacific NW

Melissar, We followed a similar path; kids went their ways, empty nest, downsized by selling the larger house we didnt need, and bought a trawler. Lots of folks love GBs so i'm sure its a good option. However, there are in fact so many options this day in age for something in the trawler...

Whether Higher HP Engine is Worth It?

Mark, there's a guy on here "Flyer50" that just went through this trade study on a new Helmsman 38E, seems like you could get more specific advice over in his thread and maybe in general under the Helmsman/Camano builder thread. His thread was called "Helmsman 38E for May 2018 Delivery"

    Hello from Peterborough

Liz, I’d say do it! A day on the water always beats a day on land. You could certainly do it but single handing is more manageable more towards the 36’ range. If you want to have some fun and check out many different kinds of trawlers, check out passagemaker.com and find a trawlerfest you can...

    Another 32'-40' Trawler Shopper

Greetings Eddie, We too shopped and studied, in fact for about 2-1/2 yrs before we landed in a 41’ trawler. It’s just the wife & I most of the time but I’ll say we do love the space and feel like this 40-ft range is kind of a sweet spot. Be aware that generally in boat brokerage the seller has...

    Decisions..2007 Yamaha 2 stroke or 2018 Tohatsu 4 stroke

Looks like you'll get opinions both ways so I'll throw one in. I'd definitely go 4-stroke because i'd never want the extra noise, smoke (even if it is just at startup), and oil mix hassle of a 2-stroke. i have a 4-stroke 15hp on about the same size RIB and as others have said, 20hp is likely...

AIS do you turn it off

Just looking at the chart plotter, Garmin 5000-series. but if you've played with AIS, we've all seen places like big marinas or shipping channels where things can get filled with targets. I grabbed an example thats a bit severe from Singapore to make the point. So of course there can be...

AIS do you turn it off

Slow Lane, I see you clearly in a marina near New Squantum south of Boston, i guess it works! (I looked at Vesselfinder.com) As for leaving On, it doesnt bother us too much though I understand the argument. Good example is entering a marina unknown to you with a narrow slot in a high breakwater...

Whats up with marinas that have no cleats?

Been visiting a few marinas in the PNW including BC Canada and often find when you pull up; instead of cleats they just have wooden horizontal 4 x 4 or maybe horizontal metal bars. In most of these places we've found it sort of works to double the lines back to your own cleat but can be a little...

Dan; just curious, why do you have a 75-ft slip...?

May be repositioning to west coast of Fl.

I think what caught some folks off guard has to do with the way the forum displays current thread titles. at least in my browser setup; if the title exceeds a certain length as it did in this case, it will truncate the title over on the right side summary window. Therefore in this case at a...

    Bottom paint type

We're not experts but just had ours done in the PNW, which might be similar to the NE. My understanding is for one thing, its easier to go back with the same type of paint you had on there before (hard vs. ablative), probably due to how much sanding or prep work is required. We went with hard...

Which one? Nordic Tug or Taiwanese Trawler.

 Uh-oh, we're not getting into that single vs. twin debate again are we...? It's a lot like the FB vs no FB debate; very subjective. But yes to answer the size question; the AT 435 like mine has a 500hp single Cummins. ATs never had twins because the hull form heritage was from a...

Which one? Nordic Tug or Taiwanese Trawler.

A couple of corrections: All ATs and NTs are single engine. As for flybridge; it is optional on both ATs and NTs. by observation i'd say most of the ATs and NTs in the PNW do not opt for the FB, perhaps due to cooler and wetter weather certain parts of the year.

Good Bottle for small amount of diesel?

Wow lots of great ideas, thanks for all the feedback. my Racors are at a level somewhat near the top of the fuel tanks so I suppose if I fill the tanks all the way to the top, there's a chance gravity would take care of this... maybe i'll try it this spring.

Good Bottle for small amount of diesel?

This question is related to when you're replacing a fuel filter and you want to squeeze some extra diesel into the new filter to top it off. I heard of someone using one of those sports bottles with the nipple that pops up on the top. Sounds like a good size and being able to squeeze it to sort...

    Wanted: American Tug 34

Yes there is a common history between the two companies, but the hull molds are completely different. In both the ~34 foot length as well as the ~42 foot lengths the American is almost exactly 2 feet wider in beam. But there are other similarities; both have full keel protected props, single...

    Wanted: American Tug 34

Kent, looks like there's two AT34s on Yachtworld on the east coast but you're probably aware there is not a large inventory. I don't know what your price range is but have you heard the American Tug factory (Tomco) is now producing a new product called the Waypoint 36 and is built from the same...

    Boat Name Decals

Arthurc; in your area near Anacortes is an exceptional family-owned small business called Jamies Signs, who did our transom and at the time we understood they had done over 8000 boat names for customers. They go far beyond just lettering and of course do elaborate graphics if you like. Our name...

Recommendations for a Hands-On Diesel Engine Maintenance Course?

Another thing to think about: Once you find your Ranger, presumably you will have a survey done and many people recommend you have two different surveyors; one for the boat, and one for the engine. If you get an engine surveyor that is extremely thorough and willing to show you everything during...

    Guns on board

I feel a bit sorry for the OP getting all this random advice, ha! Unfortunately governments have made this such a huge deal that you really need professional advice to stay legal on this issue. One part of the answer is; it depends on where you go. Someone said watch for "northern states". This...
