how many of you have liability only insurance

If you plan to keep your boat in a marina, check to see what their requirements are before deciding. If you have a private dock, ignore me. :)

    Hurricane Holes in NC

We keep our boat at North West Creek Marina, 7 miles from New Bern. We are considered a hurricane hole. They hadn’t lost a boat until Florence. Long story there and water was up 12 ft from normal. (Boatyards lost boats during that storm). Not fancy, but good….and a good community. Pecan...

    Hurricane Prep and Bimini/Enclosures...

Remember, it’s not only if your enclosure can take the wind, but can it take projectiles flying off of your neighbors boats?

    Hurricane Rider Fun...

It’s not “that” bad…. Some storms come and go with little drama… Some storms leave a mark……..but proper expectations on what marinas require when they do come is needed. . Our experience is here in New Bern, Morehead/ Beaufort/ Southport. Further north on the Pamlico and Albermerle Rivers...

    Hurricane Rider Fun...

We get hit so frequently that many of the marinas close to the coast require you to vacate when your marina is in the “cone” of a named storm…any named storm. We have a few marinas that are hurricane holes….but not many. And getting on a boatyard’s haul out list for hurricanes is difficult and...

    Flybridge side shade

Sure! If you want it up while underway, you’ll definitely want to use Phifertex so you can see through it. Attach at the frame with Velcro straps. Get a piece of patterning material from Sailrite and make a pattern however you’d like it to be. I made a large one that hangs from the aft...

What will the Marina War mean to you?

Oh by the way, I got a notification last week that Jarrett Bay Boatworks is now a Safe Harbour.

What will the Marina War mean to you?

Interesting conversation. Our marina in New Bern was recently acquired by an investor and will be managed by Oasis Marinas. Does anyone have any experience with Oasis? They seem to manage many marinas along the East coast, several that we have thought about visiting.

    Winterize in New Bern?

It is a Doubletree now. We are down river a bit at Northwest Creek. We have neighbors who do winterize because they are gone all winter. Our marina turns off water when temps are below freezing and turn it back on when they rise, usually with enough notice to make arrangements. Most folks...

    Leave Freezer and Refrigerator running?

Any time we leave the fridge off, it takes forever to cool back down. We only do this when hurricane prepping or for boatyard time. We keep ours running all the time. Obviously you don’t want to leave milk or other stuff that can go bad. I can tell you to not leave anything in the freezer...

    Sunbrella SeaMark

Seamark has a tendency to mildew quite a bit in hot humid environments. We had linen tweed seamark on our previous trawler with a three sided enclosure in NC. We had to remove the Bimini a few times a year to clean the mildew off. Not a big deal, but it does mildew in certain environments...

    Threshold for Liveaboard?

Ben - you should call around and ask. Your bigger issue will be finding a slip available. It’s unbelievable how full all of the marinas are, even for weekend transient visits. WiFi is also hard to come by because of how many people are now working from the boat. Make sure you have a solid...

Winter boating life in North Carolina?

Tom and I have kept our boat(s) in NC for the last 10 years. We are weekenders who live 2.25 hours away from New Bern. There have been several years when we are in shorts washing the boat or actual boating in Dec-Feb. Our cruising grounds are perfect for weekend visits to Oriental, Morehead...

    Sundeck screens

We kept it simple and put grommets on our sun screen with stainless carabiners and eye hooks attached to the hard top, radar arch and Bimini. It moves between our cockpit, aft fly bridge and front of fly bridge. Did the same on our sun deck trawler previously. We just hang it where ever we...

    Waxing the brow?

We have a marina neighbor that adapted a weed eater as a long reach buffer! I just go out on ours....very carefully.....we are thinking of a couple stripes of nonskid out there.

    Trawler Travel with Young Family

Just throwing it out there.....a Bayliner 4788 with the three cabin layout might work well for a growing family. Not a trawler, and bigger than the wish list....but worth a look for sure.

    Sofas for small places

True, there are several options out there, just none fit our space for the sofa. The entry door is not our problem, it has been the footprint available. This one does fit and looks pretty good doing it. ?

    Sofas for small places

Hi All!! I searched and searched and couldn’t find the last thread about small sofas for salons. (Okay, that’s not true, I did find my own old post from 2012 with our previous boat.). At any rate....I continued to search for replacement sofas over the years, as the one in our Navigator has...
