    I lost my steering

Ricky, What type of system is it? Are you sure you needed to add fluid or could it have just been air pressure? Mine is a Hynautic system and there are sight glasses on the reservoir that allow me to see the fluid level. I too have had to pump mine up (once about 18 months into my eight...

    Shower Sump Connection

I confirmed that it’ll work. It’s a 1 1/2” by 1 1/2” nut for a slip joint The one I got was a Lasco part # 03-1835 and they have them at Springdale Ace Hardware (Springdale and Edinger in Huntington Beach) but I bet any Ace hardware would have them. Good luck. Let me know if you ever want...

    Shower Sump Connection

Welcome aboard! I am dealing with this exact problem on my Californian as well and the project is slated for this weekend. The threaded drain flange you can feel is a standard plumbing fitting (I don’t recall the exact size but I believe it is a sink size). If you take the corroded nut to any...

    Another Zincs type anode question

On my 3208 NA CATs (1981 vintage), there are anodes at each end of the heat exchanger (one in each bonnet). i believe there is one other plug in the bonnet where the raw water initially comes in but any regular zinc hits the divider in the bonnet and won't screw in so I treat that one like a...

    Epoxy Recommendations

Al, My initial projects involve relocating a weaver dinghy davit on my swim step. I believe the step is form-cored and I'll need to patch/fill the old holes and create a solid base for the new holes. After following another thread here on mounting to cored decks, I figured epoxy was the best...

    Epoxy Recommendations

Thanks all for the information! You've provided really helpful input and I appreciate it. Also, (something new to me) I was not aware there were UV-resistant hardeners.

    Epoxy Recommendations

I've been reading and learning a bunch about epoxy. Seems like miracle stuff for some applications and I can't believe I've gone this long without using it. I'm about to take the first steps and was looking for recommendations from those more experienced than I am (that means pretty much...

possible purchase of Californian 34 LRC 1981 - need some input

Actually (surprisingly), it’s not too bad - even with 3208 Cats (big V8 diesels). There’s room on the outside for me to crawl to change the zincs in the exhaust elbows (I’m on top of my battery banks while doing it). I’m by no means a small guy either. I can only imagine there’d be more room...

possible purchase of Californian 34 LRC 1981 - need some input

I echo what others say about the boat. Well-built and very livable. I can’t speak to the engines as I have the Cats in mine. Seems like I can’t go on a trip without someone approaching me to tell me how great a Californian is, or how their previous boat was a Californian and they miss it, or...

    Changing an impeller advice

Ned, I have twin 3208NA engines in my boat and change the impellers without taking the pumps off the engine. Is it tight? Yes, a bit, but doable. I take off the rear cover, being careful not to lose the small bolts that hold on the cover. I then use a pair of pliers to grab the impeller by the...

    Dinghy Davits

I have Weaver Davits for my inflatable and an outboard bracket on the swimstep where I store my 6HP 4stroke Nissan (Tohatsu) outboard. The weight has not been an issue in my experience. The transom (like the hull) of the 34LRC is thick solid fiberglass and seems to be up the task.

    Wire nut replacement

I've used them extensively at home. They work really well and it's nice to have the ability to take the wires out and reconnect if needed. They are much more secure than wire nuts. I'm embarrassed to say I've never thought about using them on the boat....but I will now!

Chinese Vs Sailrite walking foot sewing machines

We also have a Rex but not the zig zag model. It seems to work fine. Probably not as nice as the Sailrite but it is substantially less expensive and gets the job done. We bought it on eBay (I believe) several years ago but only finally broke it out during the pandemic down time. While a...

    Impeller Brand

I've always used the OE impellers for my raw water pumps. the last time I had them changed by someone else (it was a last-minute time thing, I normally do them myself). When I changed them this time, I found they had used a Kashiyama impeller. At first I was a bit upset, but then I started...
