    Best Hurricane Tie?

I think it is hard to trust floating docks. I don’t know how many pictures of destroyed marinas I have seen where boats are broken loose that are still tied to a large section of dock. I would always tie to the pyles in the center of slip with the longest lines possible… especially spring lines…...

Do experts recommend separate inverters and chargers?

In the past, I was a huge proponent of separate devices, however, when it came to an actual install, I went with a Victron inverter charger. There was some concern, but the technology that used to mean Jack of all trades- master on none has pretty much been worked out. The two systems work...

    What size water heater?

Well, a lot of this is about gaining space and losing starboard weight. I will look at the Torrids though. Thanks.

    What size water heater?

The genset would probably be the primary way to reheat the water. It isn't that I CAN'T hook it to the starboard engine... I just don't know if I WANT to. Setting aside that it adds several more points of failure. Access to the front of that engine where the fresh water pump is located is pretty...

    What size water heater?

This is the case. We don’t have a way to easily use the engine to heat the water on this boat. So we will rely totally on shore, genset, or maybe even inverter (which honestly isn’t a high priority, but with a 900Ah bank and 3000W inverter we could possibly do… however we are not currently wired...

    What size water heater?

And this is my point… Could I live easily with an 8g unit? I don’t know since I have had a 20g all these years, but maybe I am only using less than 25% of its capacity.

    What size water heater?

Thanks everyone. This is helpful. It is a bit scary jumping from a 20g down to an 8g. That’s a long way. I think we’ll be fine though. Bess is a little concerned that it would affect resale, but I am thinking that a new water heater would score more points than old and nobody, including me...

    What size water heater?

This… and I have done zero routine maintenance to it. Yes, that’s on me, but waiting only means that it will fail at some inopportune time AND won’t add any additional room for engine maintenance until I do. I may flush it out and see what happens. That’s free, but I still think it should be...

    What size water heater?

I’m not sure I fully understand the “mixing” system or “mixing valve” thing. Can someone explain it, please? -edit- Nevermind… it was right there in the product description. Doh! All Isotemp water heaters come standard with a mixing valve Every Isotemp tank features a safety mixing valve that...

    What size water heater?

Hello team! I am considering downsizing our water heater. Currently we have a 20g Raritan that is 22 years old. It’s just a matter of time before it fails. Anyway, it lives on the outboard side of the starboard motor and makes for some cramped quarters doing regular maintenance on things like...

    How does a scam work?

Just curious... Wouldn't the Secret Service be the agency that would cover bank fraud/counterfeit checks?

    High water alarm

I am considering one too... I was thinking of a 12V switch connected to a car horn. As an added layer for when we are onboard, I was thinking about adding a 120V AC float switch from Grainger (like ones you would use in a sump under your house) that would cut the power to the air conditioner's...

    Costs to paint

That is a little over $36,000US and that is a pretty good price. We are in the market for a full paint job too (thread pending). We had a job booked here in NC that was quoted at $40k (plus about $10k for unexpected issues we would probably find) for our 42’ Navigator. I have started to look in...

$20 to dock your dinghy for dinner.

It seems to be lost on some of you that the marina closes at 5p and the restaurant does not open until 5p… so unless you must be there at 5p and dinghy up at 430p, there is no way to charge for docking your dinghy there. And not the the restaurant cares on way or another, they don’t own or...

    Voyage Planning

Dan's right. Don't overthink this or you will never be happy with your situation. Step one is to get the right boat for you and your family. Don't buy it based on where you MIGHT go, buy the right one and THEN explore the places you CAN go. We are based in New Bern with a 4.5' draft and a pretty...

$20 to dock your dinghy for dinner.

So, for the record… Joseph’s is one of the nicer restaurants in the area and is always busy. Also, they don’t give a crap about boater access. It is barely a remainder in their overall business. HOWEVER… the marina closes at 5p and the restaurant does not open until 5p. So does all this hoopla...

    Worth it to upgrade tv’s?

I’m with Porgy. I watch TV a lot and it would be up all the time. It also seems like the quintessential “another thing to break”. However, if you are a minimal watcher, yea, maybe a hide-away is a good option. I would, however, rather have the extra cabinet storage than use it for the lifting...

    Anchor chain washdown from pulpit?

I would be inclined to design one myself. you can buy replacement nozzles for pressure washers. Not the color-coded plastic ones, but 3/8" stainless screw on ones. Three or four would likely be plenty... maybe even two. Then you could have a metal fab guy bend a horseshoe shaped stainless tube...

    Fun New West Marine Policy

You are going to pay up for the ability to walk in and buy what you want... when you want it. Yea, WM is not ideal, however, in my area it is the ONLY option. If we lose it, it will become a real problem for me and my insatiable appetite for projects. In this case, and the real problem I see, is...
