    Kadey Krogen 54 for sale

After 7 years of cruising full time Joanna and I have decided to put our Kadey Krogen 54 Passagemaker, Ursa Major on the market. Not an easy decision but with our 4th Grandchild having just arrived it’s something we feel is right for us. During our tenure as custodians of Ursa Major we have...

    Hurricane Rider Fun...

We were at Ortega Landing when Irma came a calling. By then a TS. An uninsured boat from the river dragged down onto us and caused over $38,000 of damage. The marina lost power with the storm surge but other than that was fine. Left there a few weeks ago and I can report that the number of...

Sooo .... how bad is it?

There is a 1/2” hole below the exhaust . The new manifold will plug the hole and use #2 gasket material. Once complete top off the antifreeze if needed. Not an issue. Good luck. Paul

    Holding Tank Monitor

I have had good luck so far using tank tender for the last 3 years. I have had one down tube plug but other than that it is great. Use it for diesel, fresh water too.

    Lehman 120 Exhaust Elbow

As others have said buy a replacement Stainless one. Once you have bought it I would install it. If you wish to carry an emergency spare perhaps hang onto the old one. Waiting for it to fail is in my opinion a risky strategy and one that’s has little merit and the cash has already gone out of...

Boat Yard Recommendations for the St. Johns River

Another option near Thunderbolt is the Hinkley yard. Quality work and the rates in GA are a little less than FL. We winter at Ortega Landing as others on this post do. The yards near there are good too.

    Bought a Kadey Krogen 54

They are a great boat to travel in and to make your home. We have been custodians of Hull #1 since July 2017 and have been impressed with the build and original design. We are currently maybe 65% through the update and catch up maintenance. Ursa Major will be heading North again this summer...

    Naiad Fin shaft seal replacement

The $1500 number sounds right from my recollection, also done two years ago. All that was changed was the seals and torque lock washers. A yard with the right gear pops the fins off very quickly. After that it’s a one man job until refitting. Again the refit is relatively quick. KK 54

Does anyone actually use a bathtub on their boat?

We had a full tub with water jets when we first got the boat. From before signing I new it had to go. We never used it and I doubt the hot water system could have filled it. This year we took it out and put a full walk in shower. Very pleased with the change. We now have a 32” x 60” shower...

    My dad's drafting tools

I believe they still have a use in teaching the basics of geometry and more and would like the opportunity to be custodians them. Our grandchildren are of an age where learning hands on as well as electronically are of interest. Happy to discuss at your convenience.

Canoe (or double end) boats efficient?

Our canoe stern access hatch was well thought out a James Krogen. It’s easy to use, and the boat is very good down wind in a seaway. The Kadey Krogen 54 has a lot of North Sea Fishing boat hull shape in according to the builders and I see that having lived in the UK for 40 years prior to moving...

    Washer/Dryer Usage on Board

We have a vented washer drier by Splendide that works well. Replaced it when we got the boat and regularly use it. For us it is a necessary part of life on board

Reducing roll while anchored or moored.

We added the Forespar flopper stoppers. The standard length for the bigger pole at 14’ was too long to easily stow when not in use. We shortened them to 12’6” at the time of ordering and fitted the kit in an hour or so. Very robust and works. Like almost all systems you have work out how it...

The front fell off - Bow pulpit broke

What ever construction material you choose a support under the bowsprit will help. It will allow it to be lighter and not have to adsorb as much load when breaking our the anchor. I added this to my boat this spring as I had upgraded the size of anchors I wanted and felt the original very...

    Bimini Frame Hex Set Screws??

I should have expanded my reply. Everyone of the fittings is riveted, except one each side which gives me the option to dismantle to flat. If a few were done on then a few spares would be put into play.

    Bimini Frame Hex Set Screws??

The guy who just fitted my new Bimini made a point of taking out the screws, drilling and pop riveting them. He said the 40 plus years of doing similar jobs had told him the set screws can be problematic.

Just rotated it by hand. It moves relatively easily. The diver was there to align the cutters on each shaft.

    Replacing Damper Plate

Changing the dampers at the dock is a straight forward job as others have described. The only complications are if you have to push the prop back the cutters will likely disengage. We did both our engine damper plates over a couple of days and had a diver available to align the cutters and mesh...

    Redoing teak,epoxy, urethane, paint?

I have had good success with teak using a sealing epoxy first. On the second coat of epoxy before it trips start varnishing. I have done that with the Bristol finish and also with varnish. Both seem to adhere well. Bristol builds quickly, sand easily and refinished easily but where it does fail...
